    US Open predictions

After watching a couple of practice rounds, I'm picking Retief Goosen to win the Open this week at Pinehurst.

He may be the best player in the world not named Tiger.

And I will be surprised if anyone is under par when the week is over. Payne Stewart won the last one here in '99 with one under par.

I'm going with Phil Mickelson. He came so close in '99 and he likes this course.

If I had another pick I'd go with David Toms. He's such a solid player who makes very few mistakes.

    Re: US Open predictions

Tiger is definitely locked and loaded too.

He was hitting drivers 345 - 350 on the range, flying them 325 when I was watching him Tuesday.

The course is in perfect shape. The brown spots you see on TV are no problem, they play no differently than the rest of the course. It's pretty tricky to get the course to peak at the right time, especially with the weather we've had in the sandhills this year.

The greens on 5 and 13 will be very interesting to watch all week. Tuesday, they were mowing, rhen rolling, then mowing again and a USGA official came out and stopped them on 13. It's already rolling 11.5 on the stimpmeter. That's about like putting on the hood of your car and stopping it at the hood ornament.

You guys come on down, we're having a hell of a party here this week.

    Re: US Open predictions

I'll take Tiger at -4 to win the tournament.

    Update on play on Thursday.

Olin Browne and Rocco Mediate are in the clubhouse at -3.

Retief Goosen is -2 through 17.

Ernie Els is +1 through the first round

Phil Mickelson should be teeing off for his first round right about now.

    Tiger is E through 17.

    Re: US Open predictions

I predict that golf will be played on days both sunny and cloudy. There may be rain, but I'm not confident enough in that to lay any money down on it.

Retief spelled backward is Feiter, btw.

    My pick Davis Love III

I expect Tiger, Chris DiMarco, Fred Couples, Jeff Maggert, Bob Tway, David Toms, and John Daly to also all perfom well. But whoever knows with Daly, he seems to lose his confidence too fast.

You'll love it. The Stadium Course is quite a challenge.

Number 17 may be the most recognizable and photographed hole in the world, right up there with Amen Corner at Augusta.
