IMDB.com top 250 movies of all time

    http://www.imdb.com/chart/top

    Rank Rating Title Votes
    1. 9.1 The Godfather (1972) 245,531
    2. 9.1 The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 290,304
    3. 9.0 The Godfather: Part II (1974) 140,476
    4. 8.9 Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il (1966) 77,921 (the good the bad and the ugly...)
    5. 8.8 Pulp Fiction (1994) 249,586
    6. 8.8 Schindler's List (1993) 168,845
    7. 8.8 Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 179,300
    8. 8.8 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) 125,499
    9. 8.8 Casablanca (1942) 111,572

    19. 8.7 C'era una volta il West (1968) 39,971
    20. 8.7 The Usual Suspects (1995) 174,308

I have no real problems with the list but any and all Star Wars movies are over rated IMO as well as any movie written or directed by Quentin Tarantino. Pulp Fiction is solid but do people really believe it is the 5th best movie of all time???

What are some of you guy's top 10?

    Mine

    1) The Departed
    2) Shawshank Redemption
    3) Taxi Driver
    4) The Godfather
    5) Snatch
    6) Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    7) Casino
    8) Fight Club
    9) 12 Monkeys
    10) Green St Hooligans

One of my personal favorites that wasn't in the top 20 was the Green Mile. I see Shawshank Redemption though, glad to see that. I bought both together in a two pack at Walmart a couple years ago. Best 14.97 I ever spent.

I can't believe "Undercover Brother" didn't make it. That Eddie Griffin, wow what a talent.

I agree on the Pulp Fiction. That movie is way overrated. Goodfellas should be top ten at least.

Wait. You think Pulp Fiction is overrated but Snatch is your number 5? Would there have been a Snatch without Pulp Fiction?

I like to think that Tarantino went to the future and saw how good of a movie snatch was and decided to use the premise to make pulp fiction. Thankfully he never thought he should just steal Snatch himself. All that would have resulted would have been a pretty good movie instead of one of my favorite films of all time... Airplane! Now that's a great movie. That's good, clean, family entertainment.
If you can't build a winning team with that core a fire-sale isn't the solution. Selling the franchise, moving them to Nashville and converting GABP into a used car lot is.

Planes trains and Automobiles didn't even make the top 50 comedies - Wow! That movie makes my sides split.

You might not personally like Star Wars (or the superior film, The Empire Strikes Back), but its impossible to ignore its accomplishments as a film and as a cultural touchstone. I'd say its absolutely acceptable as a Top-10 selection, but that's just MY opinion.

I also think its tough to do a "All Time" list including any movie less than 2 years old, as I think one of the criteria for a movie being in such a list is having it stand up to scrutiny 5-10 years following its release.

Re: IMDB.com top 250 movies of all time

FYI, the IMDB list is always changing almost literally minute by minute, according to user votes. The last time I looked, the LOTR movies had been rated higher.
Additionally, you can see some movies have a lot more votes than others - look at the totals of Shawshank compared to 12 Angry Men or Seven Samurai. But, while this is hardly a scientific study, I like their rating system a whole lot.
I liked Godfather II more than the first (and I like the first a LOT) - but that is because I liked the flashbacks comparing the rise of Vito with the life of Michael spiraling down. I also like Leon's Once Upon A Time In The West (19) more than I like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - which I also consider a masterpiece.
For me, making a choice for all-time favorite movies is an almost impossible task, depending on my moods.

I really like The Shawshank Redemption, but the second best movie of all time? No way. It's a great story, but I hardly thinks it should be in the conversation of best all time movies.

I also think I'm one of the few guys who didn't love Pulp Fiction. It was just OK for me.

Now the Godfather at #1, no doubt about it.

Pulp Fiction largely created a genre of which Snatch was but one example.

I'll give you props on Casino which was always underrated vis-a-vis Goodfellas, although both were excellent.

The Departed was interesting, but ulimately a little disappointing considering the great performances and a great plot they lifted from Infernal Affairs. And Scorcese just doesn't get the Irish -- he made them Italians who dress worse.

Any list should include Singing in the Rain, Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Bonnie & Clyde.

I've never met anyone who didn't like Shawshank, and I know quite a few people who will watch it overandoverandover again whenever it is on TNT. Those are the hallmarks of a great movie to me, critics be damned. Too bad the studios released it the same year that Schindler's List came out because it should have won an oscar for best picture.

I think the IMDB 250 list is great (and very helpful, to boot). My wife and I did without cable for a few years, and in our spare time, we ran through most of the best movies of all time. We used Roger Ebert's "Great Movies", the American Film Institute's 100 best of the 20th century, and the IMDB 250 list as our sources. I have to say that IMDB helped out tremendously.

The value of IMDB's list is to provide a little grounding, relative to the critics' picks. If the critics liked it and people didn't, I learned to stay away. And vice versa. For instance, the critics didn't rave over "One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest", but people do. And the people are right, in this case.

For anyone seriously interested in film, I highly recommend taking the time to watch the movies on these lists.

Be sure to take a stroll through the best foreign films as well: Kurosawa's films are amazing; I enjoyed Truffault's films more than I expected; and I am a better person for having seen Fellini's films, although I can't say I universally loved them. FWIW.
