Re: What am I listening to?

Over the last five years, about 75% of my listening is to kids' music. Unfortunately, people tend to write this stuff off, but I have found some real gems in this genre.

    Some of my faves:

Dan Zanes - he did a song called "Wonderwheel" on the For the Kids compilation album that is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard. And he seems to be friends with everyone and they all perform on his CDs. I mean, Debby Harry is on one of them!?

The Wiggles - these guys are probably way too kid oriented for most adults, but I think they are great musicians.

TMBG - even the stuff these guys write for adults is like kids music.

Ralph Covert - a folk/rock guitar instructor who really doesn't consider himself a kids' musician. I think that is what makes a great kids' performer, someone who isn't trying to dumb it down for them.

Raffi- Yes, Raffi. The guy can play; I never get tired of him.

Jerry Garcia - his old time repertoire was enormous and he gravitated toward the sillier sounding ones. His CD with David Grisman is a masterpiece of traditional music.

Doc Watson - see above and give "Doc and Dawg" a try sometime.

WOY: I have heard mixed reviews on that Neil Young CD. More like his Crazy Horse stuff or is it more like his International Harvesters stuff?

It's with the International Harvesters I believe, a cross between Harvest Moon and Silver and Gold.

Sounds pretty good. The only time I was lucky enough to see Neil Young play live was when he was playing with the Harvesters during the mid-late 80's. What a fantastic show they put on that night...

Was it at Riverbend? I saw him there in 85 with the IE's (broke my ankle in the rain) and 88 (he played Cripple Creek Ferry on the banjo) that was a Blue Notes tour. 87 was with Crazy Horse

Since Neil lived up the road from us in Palo Alto he played alot in the Bay Area, I've seen him maybe 15 times in many different venues and bands. The best was a cable special he did in the late 80's Live In A Rusted Out Garage with Crazy Horse, and they did some role playing with some Jim Henson (like?) charactors.

Nah, I lived in Florida at the time. I saw him at the Hollywood Sportatorium. Most people who have seen concerts in that venue will know of it as the "Distortatorium"

Let's see...Matt Molloy and Sean Keane (great CD), Rich Mullins, Third Day, Russ Taff, and a good assortment of classical...definitely a bit different from most everyone else here.

Nope, just Frank. Though I did see him with Booker T and the MG's as his backup.

A very good album. Southern rock with hooks and a conscience.

BTW - There is an acoustic version of "Carl Perkins' Cadillac" floating around somewhere. I heard it on the radio once, but I can't find it. If you or anyone else here can get ahold of it, please PM me.

I've been listening to Flyleaf for the last couple days. They're a band out of Texas, debut CD came out Tuesday. Rock music, female lead singer.

You can hear a couple songs on either of these sites:
    www.flyleafmusic.com
    www.myspace.com/flyleaf
