The Weight is a Gift couldn't be any better. I've had it for awhile on mp3 and I haven't gotten sick of it.

I'm on a big Ben Lee kick right now, awesome record.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

Franz Ferdinand's new release: You Could Have It So Much Better.

I really like The Arcade Fire a lot. Zero 7 offers some great "chill" music. I'm going to see Galactic next month (they're a fun jazz fusion jam band). Ben Harper is great, and I would love to see him live. Everybody is raving about The Decemberists.

Five years ago, I was really depressed with the state of music. The Strokes and The White Stripes ushered in a new era of good tunes.

For the most part, I have no idea what people are talking about on this thread. So, it makes me wonder not as much what they are listening to, but how they tend to find out about new music? When I was in high school and college, it was WOXY and I still rely on radio, listening to WKNU and WXPN while I'm at work.

I think I must be an oddball with very different tastes, because I don't have a clue who most of the artists are who are mentioned on this thread. I'm into Irish music, classical, some jazz, some gospel, and I own one country CD. It's a pretty nice recording called Neck and Neck with Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler together doing some really impressive guitar work.

Ten great songs from one great year.

Today it is 1982. In 1982 I was a freshman in high school and I was listening The Cars, just like I am at this very moment.

    "Since you're gone......"
Get your nunchucks and the keys to your dad's car. I know where we can get a gun

    WOXY, that's so 1998.

Satellite radio and iPods/iTunes have changed the rules for learning about new music.

Satellite radio makes it easier to identify new music that you like immediately, since it displays the singer and song name on the dashboard. Moreover, the stations are much more tailored to very specific musical tastes, so you get a richer depth of musical experiences than you do on traditional radio. (Satellite radio's music stations are commercial free with little interruption from the DJs, so no downtime.)

Digital music lowers your financial risk for trying new music--you can buy a song for 99 cents (or take the Napster/Kazaa "five finger discount," if anyone is still doing that), rather than having to buy the full album for $10-15. And clearly, digital files make it much easier to share and exchange new music with your friends.

They've just added a new feature: podcasts of their Lounge Sessions. Not too many are up yet, but they're going to add one every day until they're all online. Then they're going to offer them streaming.

    "Somewhere there's a reason
Why things go like they do
    Somewhere there's a reason
    Why somethings just fall through
    We don't always see them
    For what they really are
    But I know there's a reason,
Just can't see it from this far

Maybe I don't like it, but I have no choice
I know that somewhere, someone hears my voice

I thought I knew it all
I thought I had it made
How could it end this way?
    I thought I knew

    Somewhere there's a reason
Why things don't go my way
    Somewhere there's a reason
    That I cannot explain
Just like the change of season,
Just may not be my turn
    But I know there's a reason,
    The lesson's mine to learn

Maybe I don't like it, but I have no choice
I know that somewhere, someone hears my voice

I thought I knew it all
I thought I had it made
How could it end this way?

For those of you who don't know this guy, picture everything good about alternative music of the 80s/90s and cross that with the Frank Zappaesque orchestrations and humor of the 60s/70s.

It's not all just silliness, but it's hard to resist a song called "Come on feel the Illionoise" or a biographical tribute to John Wayne Gacy.
". . . acquiring J. Blanton from Oakland for, apparently, Bailey/Cueto, Votto and a lesser prospect. I do it in a second . . . The Reds' equation this year is simple: Make Matt Belisle your #3 starter . . . trade for Blanton, win 85 or more, be in the mix all summer." - Paul Daugherty, Feb. 8, 2008
