Florida sports fan sentenced to death

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) -- A man who got angry with his wife because she wanted to cuddle after sex when what he really wanted to do was watch sports on television was sentenced to death for killing her with a claw hammer.

Christopher Offord, 30, was sentenced Wednesday by Circuit Judge Dedee Costello, who said the brutality of the crime outweighed any mental problems Offord may have had.

"The defendant struck his wife approximately 70 individual blows after spending a happy interlude with her," the judge said. "Her desire to cuddle after sex does not justify the extremely violent, brutal response of the defendant."

Offord pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the 2004 slaying of Dana Noser, 40, at his apartment.

He confessed to a bartender at a sports bar before his arrest. He told investigators that his wife had been nagging him to come back to bed.

Offord did not speak in court but said in a jailhouse interview in June: "I figured I killed her so I deserve to die."

Would 60 minutes have been more reasonable to you?

    Just kidding, but seriously...

I love how stories like these make no mention of what probably involves a serious mental illness - as if he was just your typical Joe Schmoe sports bar slob who decided to go postal with a claw hammer on his girlfriend because he couldn't watch his mindlessly repetitive sports drivel on the tube.

I guess he was determined to watch ESPN at either one place or the other...

My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Crackerjack is right--this guy is obviously mental about "cuddling"--often victims of sexual abuse are okay during the act of sex itself, but can be violently disturbed by intimacy. It's all too common. Sad really, but the "pop psych" in me says this guy was seriously sexually abused as a youth. This has nothing to do with Sportscenter or Hooters.

And to think that bartender was almost ready to switch the channel to Melrose Place. Probably saved his life.

Obviously a sad case, but its not like they don't repeat SportsCenter at 1am or even in the morning. I never watch SportsCenter at night....they repeat it all morning long...

There almost has to be something else to this........

Could there be more of an understatement? Like the guy is sitting in a holding cell right now and someone just told him that SC airs repeatedly, ad nauseum.
"Damn, I could have just watched it the next morning? Note to self..."
