    Anti-virus software

My anti-virus software has expired and being the cheap guy that I am, I don't want to re-up.

Are there any adequate anti-virus programs out there that are free?

If I need to pony up for anti-virus software, which one should I purchase?

I use AVG on the kid's computers. It seems to work fine.

    Avast is another free one.

I use this one,it's free and fantastic. After I removed Nortons that I've paid for and used for two years and installed this one,it found almost 100 different viruses and malware that Norton had missed.

    Thanks for nothing Norton's.

Norton is probably the best available on the market right now. It is not a program that you can install and be done with it though. You need to do system scans every few days and check for system updates every few days too.

My brother in law is the guy the keeps the computer systems going at Wright Patt and he says Norton is by far the best out there. He said there are others out there that on the surface seem like they might do better, but they actually might do more harm to your computer than good. He said to stay away from the free ones that you get on the internet because often times, they do just that. They look like gold on the surface, but over time will do more harm than good.

I would highly recommend. spending the $49.99 or whatever it is to re-up your Norton. That's not coming from me, that's coming from a family member who is in charge of the computers for Wright Patt.

Another program that you should really have is "Ad-Aware". What that does is helps to remove any spyware that you may have on your computer. Ad-Aware is another program that you have to constantly do full system scans and updates on.

Your computer is at risk for so much crap, and the best way to protect yourself against major problems is (despite what some say) Norton Anti-Virus and Ad-Aware.

Along with Norton 2005 I was running Ad-Aware,Spyware Blaster,Spybot _Search and Destroy and Microsofts anti-spyware. I kept Norton updated by automatic and manual updates and had it set for 3 deep scans a week. Plus my system is double firewalled. It might be good enough for the Government, but not for me.
