Moving to the Wild Wild West

It's a bittersweet week for me as I am spending my last days as a resident of the great Queen City. I accepted a job in Cheyenne, Wyo. and will be moving there next week.

I was in Cheyenne last week and I love it - the Old West feel, the beautiful weather, the mountains on the western horizon and the very friendly people who went out of their way to welcome me. It's a small town for a state capitol, but it's only about 80 miles from Denver when I need my big city fix. And since I love to hike, ski and camp, I can't imagine a more perfect location.

I will miss Cincinnati very much. I was born here and grew up about 45 minutes away in Centerville. I have lived in Cincinnati for the past 5 years since graduating from college, bouncing from Pleasant Ridge to Mount Washington to Montgomery. I'll miss all the festivals (Oktoberfest and Taste of Cincinnati particularly. I'll miss the quirky neighborhoods. I'll miss sitting on the deck at Mount Adams Pavilion at night and gazing out at one of America's most beautiful skylines. I'll miss the LaRosa's and Graeters and Montgomery Inn (not really into Skyline and Gold Star.) I'll miss being able to go to virtually any Reds game on a moment's notice. I'll miss going to UD Flyers games (I'm a season ticket holder) and now that the Bengals are finally worth watching, I'm going to miss being a part of the excitement in the city this fall but I will quickly find a sports bar to call home on Sunday afternoons.

So, for now, goodbye Cincinnati. Hello Wyoming.

I know how you feel. I moved from Cincinnati to Colorado Springs a few years ago, but ended up moving back not too long after. When I left, I thought it was going to be permanent and I really missed some of the local stuff when I was out there, especially being able to attend games in person. That part of the country does have its advantages though. I sometimes wish the distances between weren't so great, because there are things about both places that I like and I hate having to choose one place to live.

In the west sometimes the best land to explore is BLM land, many hidden treasures. Almost all of Utah is BLM land, good stuff too. A bike, a fire road and a full bag of water can take you a long way. Camping and use fees are nill and the only thing you have to do is move along every 2 weeks.
