The Maisonette auction that will wrap up today at the Westin Hotel downtown isn't the only opportunity to buy a piece of Cincinnati's recent history.
Hundreds of items from the estate of former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott will be sold in December and March by Cowan's Auctions, a Cincinnati auction house that specializes in the sale of Americana, folk art, furniture and American Indian art.
The Dec. 9 auction will include items from the colorful Mrs. Schott's Indian Hill estate.
Among the items are personal collections that include historic photographs and portraits, antique and designer furniture, sculptures, books, Rookwood china, sterling flatware, Royal Doulton figurines, clocks, tapestries, lamps, kitchenware, toys and a large collection of St. Bernard figurines and stuffed animals.
Mrs. Schott, an animal lover who died in March 2004 at the age of 75, was routinely accompanied to Reds games by her beloved St. Bernard Schottzie.
The second sale on March 31 will include her personal collection of baseball memorabilia. Cowan's Auctions said the collection encompasses hundreds of items, including Cincinnati Reds uniforms, game-used and signed bats and balls (including some from the 1990 World Series team), baseball cards, an autographed Radio Flyer pedal car, clothing, rugs and framed artwork.
Both auctions will be held at the Starlite Ballroom, 5994 Linneman St., in the California neighborhood.
Cowan's Auctions is owned by Wes Cowan, who is one of the principals in the PBS TV series "History Detectives."
He also has been one of the featured expert appraisers on another PBS series, "The Antiques Roadshow."
All of the proceeds will go to the Marge and Charles J. Schott Foundation, which has donated millions of dollars to beneficiaries that include St. Ursula Academy in Walnut Hills, the Dan Beard Boy Scout Council, St. Rita School for the Deaf in Evendale, the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families and the Greater Cincinnati Girls and Boys Clubs.
