The most overused word in sports broadcasting

    Unbelievable

Guy hits home run to win game? "Unbelievable!" screams the announcer.

Team scores a touchdown? "Unbelievable!" screams the announcer.

Some other completely believable and not-so-remarkable event occurs in a sporting event? Some announcer somewhere will shout "Unbelievable!"

Are these plays exciting? Sure. But are they unbelievable? No, not really.

Whether you agree or not, you'll think about this thread the next time you hear someone scream "Unbelievable!"

I like the one that the late Jack Buck said when Kirk Gibson homered off of Eck in the WS.... "I don't believe what I just saw."

A more appropriate description for the mouthpieces would be "remarkable". HRs and TDs are "believable" b/c they are a part of the game... "remarkable" seems a better way to describe a great play or HR.

Anything but "Holy Cow... Cubs win, Cubs win, Cubs win!"

"Setting the tone" is one I'm tired of hearing all the time.

    "The regular year"

You hear that during the baseball playoffs every year now, thanks to Al Michaels. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Baseball season doesn't last a year. There is no "regular" year, because there is no "irregular" year.

These were fresh like in 1997, but after years of the same old thing, he needs some new material.

Re: The most overused word in sports broadcasting

The stuff that really drives me nuts are the phrases that guys use which sound like some insider form of sports-lingo:

Elevate. Jump, anyone? And the other context in which "elevate" is used- to raise the level of one's performance- is just an oblique way of saying "got better", "improved", or simply "is playing a great game".
Red Zone. That one is just plain stupid, if you ask me. "Inside the twenty yard line" offers far more clarity.
    Distribute. Passed the ball around.
Hang Time. I'm just including this one in honor of a friend. He's a physicist and whenever someone says Hang Time he yells that there is no such thing.
Next Reds manager, second shooter. --Confirmed on Redszone.

Brilliant post, it's scrappy and fraught with the good times of family and friends, I only hope that you can get em on and get em over.
