    Hurricane Wilma coming soon?

    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/grap...446.shtml?5day

Looks like more trouble for the Gulf.

Wilma is the last name on the list. After this they use the greek alphabet. Here's a list of those names:

FWIW, temperatures in the Gulf have cooled considerably over the last couple of weeks, as a series of low pressure areas have brought clouds and cooler temperatures. A tropical storm in the gulf is less likely to become a major hurricane when it hits cooler water.

I wouldn't be so sure about that one. Just yesterday, I returned home from a 4 day stay in Tampa/St. Pete area. The locals down there were actually marveling at how unseasonable warm the both the air and water temperatures have been in recent days. Beautiful weather in the mid-upper 80's with low humidities and a constant water temperature in the Gulf of around 84 degrees when we left there on Sunday.

I don't think we should assume that, because it is mid-October, that the Gulf temperatures won't cause this storm to strengthen during the end of the week.

About an hour after I posted that, I heard a radio news story that said the storm would be expected to strengthen in the gulf - basically, what you posted. What I posted came from a local TV meteorologist, but he said it a couple of weeks ago, and I was figuring what he said to be extrapolatable (?) to a longer-term seasonal trend. I guess the situation has changed since the lows left the gulf.

Sounds that way....It is ironic that some of the people that I spoke with over the weekend in the Tampa area were already breathing a sigh of relief that they "escaped the season" without the mess that was experienced in LA, MS and AL. Sounds like they may have spoken too soon.

Pretty wide "potential" track. One of the NWS guys compared the storm to Mitch, in that it wasn't following expected track. I'll bet those guys are having trouble sleeping right now over this one.

Right now its projection puts it right around Tampa. Good for me up in the panhandle, but one thing you learn pretty quickly with these things is that they can change courses rather quickly.
