Bad news for any KC Chiefs fans....

What a blow to their offense this could be if it winds up being true...

Chiefs deny report of Holmes' retirement
    / Associated Press
    Posted: 6 minutes ago

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A spokesman for the Kansas City Chiefs denied a report Wednesday that running back Priest Holmes may retire because of a spinal injury.

"We won't have anything until later today," said Bob Moore, the director of public relations. "I don't think it's career-ending."
Holmes, 32, a three-time Pro Bowler whose 66 touchdowns between 2002-2004 are an NFL record for any three-year span, was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit against San Diego on Oct. 30.

He missed last week's game against Oakland and in the past two weeks has seen spinal-injury specialists in California and Florida. Speculation has been rampant that he would be out for an extended period, although the Chiefs have said they were hopeful he would soon return to the lineup.

KSHB reported Wednesday that doctors had found a lump on Holmes' spine and were concerned about possible paralysis should he take a direct hit. Citing a highly-placed source it didn't identify, the station said Holmes could announce his retirement as soon as Thursday.

Holmes' agent, Todd France, was traveling Wednesday and not immediately available. An employee of France's agency, who asked not to be named, disputed the report and said suggestions that Holmes was about to retire were inaccurate.

But no one was discounting the possibility Wednesday that the Chiefs' career rushing leader could be out an extended period, perhaps the rest of the year.

Injuries have caused Holmes to cut short two of his last three seasons. But he has shown flashes of his old self while rushing for 451 yards and six touchdowns on 119 carries. He also has 21 catches for 197 yards, including a 60-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown in a victory over Washington on Oct. 16.

If he is out for a long period, the Chiefs would turn to Holmes' backup, Larry Johnson, who has averaged 5.2 yards per carry, with 506 yards on 97 attempts. Johnson had two touchdowns in the 27-23 victory Sunday over Oakland, including a 1-yard vault on the final play of the game. He has frequently complained that he was not being given enough carries.

"I don't have any information," coach Dick Vermeil said Tuesday. "In fact, sometimes I get upset because I don't have more information. But the information and communication system is in the right hands."

When the three-time Pro Bowl running back is cleared to play again, it will be as the Chiefs' starter — even though Johnson has both of Kansas City's 100-yard rushing games this year.

For all that, though, Vermeil wants Holmes back as soon as possible — especially with the Chiefs (5-3) suiting up three backs against the Raiders. Two —Tony Richardson and Ronnie Cruz — are fullbacks.

Although the Chiefs could go with Johnson as their halfback again Sunday against Buffalo, Vermeil said, "I'm hoping that doesn't happen. We know how talented he is, but we know we need two good running backs."

Vermeil, who had been using Holmes in two of every three offensive rotations, left no doubt as to his preference for the veteran.

"If you want to base it on merit, you have to look at everything Priest Holmes has done," Vermeil said. "His numbers have been the best in the NFL."

Actually, Larry Johnson is a better running back right now. He's not as accomplished or as sure-handed, but he's talented, athletic, and hungry.

It's sad to see this happen to Priest, as he was a classy guy on and off the field. But I don't think the offense will suffer in his absence.

I'm not a Chiefs fan, but I still don't like to see guys end their careers because of injuries. He was a darn good back. It would have been nice to see him go out on his own terms and not because of something like this.

Source: Chiefs star Holmes likely out for season
    ESPN.com news services

Running back Priest Holmes, 32, is likely to miss the rest of the season, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Holmes will continue to undergo tests on his neck and shoulder, but the source said his injuries are not believed to be career-ending.

Chiefs spokesman Pete Moris on Wednesday denied a Kansas City television report that Holmes had possibly played his last game for the Chiefs and could announce his retirement as soon as Thursday.

Holmes did not play last Sunday in the Chiefs' second game this season with Oakland, and Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said Tuesday that Holmes was undergoing a battery of tests to make sure he's neurologically sound after Holmes suffered a concussion two Sundays ago against San Diego. Holmes also is suffering from the aftereffects of a shoulder injury from the first Oakland game in September.

Vermeil will address Holmes' status following Wednesday's practice and give some details in that press conference. Holmes is not retiring but his chances of returning this season are unlikely because it may take a month or so to figure out what is wrong.

Holmes has rushed for 451 yards on 119 carries and scored six touchdowns this season. Larry Johnson will finish the season as the starter. The former first-round choice leads the team with 506 yards on 97 carries and has scored six TDs.

Not trying to make light of a scary situation but also bad news for us owners with Priest on our fantasy teams (and without Larry Johnson as an insurance policy)

How could you draft Priest and not LJ? I drafted Priest in the first round and LJ in the 8th (pretty early for a backup). Time to pick up Richardson.

I'll echo what Johnny said. Prist always struck me as one of the classier individuals in the NFL. And he was way underappreciated. He's a GREAT player beyond the system, but he's a more soft spoken guy so he doesn't get the attention some others have. But he's oozes class and integrity. The NFL needs more like him.

Larry Johnson went much earlier than that in my league, or believe me, I would have. I think someone took him in the 5th or 6th round when I was still grabbing starting players.

Holmes is classy. This guy isn't.

Money will drive Holmes’ career plans

    JASON WHITLOCK

Bruises are a lot like the concept of playing sports for the love of the game: They go away.

Priest Holmes, as best we can tell, has a bruise/injury that is affecting his back or spine. If you play football (or just about any sport) long enough, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll suffer an injury that causes discomfort in your back.

Mike Sweeney has been playing baseball with back pain for the last few years. I’m sure there are doctors who would tell Sweeney he’s foolish for continuing to play. An honest doctor would tell any athlete that it’s foolish to play football at all. Every football player — high school, collegian or pro — is always one violent collision away from being carried off the field.

I mention this because I listened to Carl Peterson’s and Dick Vermeil’s impromptu press conference discussing Holmes’ latest season-ending injury, and I understand their reluctance to label Holmes’ injury as career-ending.

“At this time, we consider this not to be a career-ending injury,” Peterson said.

Bruises go away. Contracts don’t. So the Chiefs have placed Holmes on injured reserve and announced their intention to have him re-examined in 30 days. Peterson said that doctors have led him to believe that Holmes will completely recover.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Holmes will play football again.

As I listened to Peterson and Vermeil on Wednesday afternoon, I heard two football businessmen justifiably posturing. They were respectful and supportive of Holmes, but they accurately painted the picture that if Holmes exits the NFL after this season, it should be viewed as a voluntary retirement … unless doctors find a more significant injury.

And if Holmes retires, the Chiefs would have a right to ask for a portion of the bonus money they committed to Holmes before the 2003 season. If Holmes suffered a football-related injury that prevented him from playing again, then the Chiefs couldn’t ask for a return of their money.

My take, and this is purely opinion, is that Holmes wants to walk away from football as long as he can get out with all of his money. Holmes has always been more businessman than football player. Holmes has never had the kind of deep, Ray Lewis, Mike Maslowski love of football.

What drove Holmes his first two years in Kansas City was his desire to land a new, restructured contract. After one year in Kansas City, he dumped his agent, signed a new one and started asking the Chiefs for more money. He landed a new deal before his third season in KC, and he put together a record-breaking year to justify the new deal.

Since then, Holmes has struggled with motivation, contemplated retirement and been a total mystery to Vermeil and Peterson. They have no idea what he’s thinking day to day. On Wednesday, Vermeil was reduced to quoting Holmes’ father about Holmes’ injury. Vermeil blamed the local media for Holmes’ enigmatic behavior concerning this latest season-ending injury.

My belief is Holmes has proved all he wants to prove as it relates to football. He won a Super Bowl with Baltimore. He established himself as a great player in Kansas City. He got paid.

At age 32 and with no more new-contract leverage thanks to Larry Johnson, Holmes would much rather munch nachos in a stadium suite than practice three hours a day with Vermeil. Holmes is not much different from his old Texas teammate Ricky Williams. They play football because they’re good at it, not because they love the game.

I’m not trying to belittle the potential significance of Holmes’ health concerns. But when you play football, you get bruised everywhere and you ignore the risk. My roommate in college, a 160-pound cornerback, hurt his neck and shoulder in a game his junior year, and his left arm was paralyzed for 10 days. Doctors suggested that he shouldn’t play his senior year. He started and played every game.

I’m sure there are doctors who think Tedy Bruschi is crazy, playing nine months after suffering a stroke.

The Chiefs should just move on and acknowledge that Holmes somewhat outsmarted them at the negotiating table before the 2003 season. And we should all give Carl Peterson credit for drafting Larry Johnson. Maybe Carl had Holmes figured out long ago.
Controversy must taste like ice cream to Jason Whitlock.
