Re: Brian Giles signs 3 year $30 Million deal

Giles is a now a very expensive Kevin Youkilis. He would've be a perfect fit in LF for the Cards batting 2nd in that lineup ahead of Pujols
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

His SLG improved during May, but his OPS still only topped out at .821 for the month. He still has a fantastic batting eye, but his absence of power is a big problem.

That park in San Diego is huge.

Currently, he has a .423 obp on the road and a .381 at home. Even on the Road he's not the same old Giles. He's still very valuable though, IMO.

he's lost a step or two in the field making him no longer adequete to play CF (which is essentially what you're playing in right at Petco), but he's still one of the top ranging RF's in the game. and aside from the braincramp the othernight, is a great base runner.

the defense and running with a 400+ OBP and a 4+ P/PA...i'd probably pay 10 million for that attached to an 820+ OPS (i think Giles will end the season closer to an 850-860 OPS).

Not unless his numbers improve. I agree with you. He's certainly not Jason Bay plus Oliver Perez, etc. valuable.

    Yeah, that's the rub.

What's really surprising is his drop in doubles. You used to be able to pencil him in for 40 doubles like clockwork. Even a big park like San Diego shouldn't cut his doubles down so dramatically.

I still dig his game, but he is pricey.

10 million is one thing, but 3 years? By the time his last year of that contract comes he will have a 700 OPS
