Thanks! I have virus protection, but somehow this managed to squeak through unnoticed until it was too late.

Those things are sneaky. At a previous job I had a while back (last time I had to use Windows) we used to get them quite a bit and we had all sorts of protection on the servers and on each machine.
No one wastes their time trying to bring down 6% of the market.
And that's fine with me. I have Virtual PC, so I can run any Windows program I would ever want to (very rare occasion) and I don't have to worry about all the other issues.
True, you know it's the idea that your machine can be open to a network that is the deathknell to folks.
Your box is like your home, you wouldn't leave the windows and front door open al the time would you?

Switch to a 3rd party IM app. I recommend gaim. I've been using it for the last two years and don't have to put up with any of the AIM crap.
All models are wrong. Some of them are useful.
