So far I feel like a kid on Christmas morning that opened up his presents and got clothes.
The lowest acceptable payroll amount for ownership to show they are not greedy pigs is 15 million more than they are currently paying. No matter what that currently is.

BA lists Schramek as a third baseman. They didn't have a write up on him, to he wasn't part of their top 100.

    40.

Yeah, this is pretty dissapointing. I was hoping the Reds would get Upton, or at least Kazmir, but that didn't happen. Don't get me wrong, I like Gruler, but Kazmir should have been the pick. We have enough money to sign him. The other two picks I have never heard of, and I follow the Draft pretty closely.

I like the draft. With Bowden referring to Grueler like much of the baseball people were picking, I am happy.

I have the Baseball America draft issue here with me.

BA had Mark Schramek (RHP Texas San Antonio) listed as the 29th best prospect for the entire state of Texas!!! No bio available.

No bio on Kyle Edens either (RHP, Baylor). BA claims he's the 18th best prospect in the state of Texas.

Joe Votto (C, Richview Collegiate Institute) is the 6th best in Canada. No writeup, either.

From BA's Jim Callis on 5/31/02

Q: Jeff from Miami, FL asks:
Okay, two questions. First, who would you say are the safest picks in the draft, meaning those closest to guaranteed to become an every day major leaguer. Second, who are the hitters that are the closest to major-league caliber now (the most polished)?

A: Jim: The two safest picks are probably Russ Adams and Khalil Greene, among position players. I don't know if there's an ultra-polished college hitter. The best, according to a couple of teams, is Texas-San Antonio 3B Mark Schramek. The most polished HS hitters are Jeremy Hermida and Scott Moore.

    Schramek:

    2001:
Despite ending the season early after tearing the ACL in his left knee during the conference tournament, was drafted in the 45th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Cincinnati Reds...An all-SLC performer, hit .319 with 10 home runs, 13 doubles and three triples...Posted 14 multi-hit games...Enjoyed a six-game hitting streak during the last month of the season, his third six-game streak of the season...Hit first home run of his collegiate career at Louisiana-Lafayette on Feb. 4...Went 4-for-9 with two runs and three RBI in a three game series with Arkansas...Had six games with three or more hits...Went 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI against Louisiana-Monroe on March 10, finishing the game a triple shy of the cycle...Started off the first ever UTSA triple play in that same series, teaming up with Brette Parrish and Nick Prater for the 5-4-3 TP...Went 3-for-5 with one run and an RBI against Texas-Arlington on March 24, then followed it up with a 3-for-5, three-run, four-RBI day in the series' final match on Sunday...Was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI at Nebraska on April 18...Along with catcher Matt McIntyre, shattered the school hit by pitch record with 18, McIntyre finished with a record 19...Hit safely in 40 of 56 games during the season...Garnered all-SLC third base honors...Had nine multi-RBI games, including six with three-or-more...Posted a .413 on-base percentage and team-best .576 slugging mark...Picked up a team-high 110 total bases on the year to join his team-topping 39 RBI...Had a 12-game streak without a single strikeout...Posted a .933 fielding mark at third base with just nine errors on the season...Led the team at the plate in the fall with a .471 average, totaling seven doubles and three home runs with 23 RBI...Voted as team captain along with Justin Brandt and Danny Phillips...Pre-season first team all-SLC third baseman.

Obviously, the Reds really liked him to draft him last year and this year. What happened that he didn't sign last year? Sounds like a good hit for average third baseman with possibility for power later on.

Schramek's a LH hitter who supposedly has a strong arm. BA listed him #20 at his position. The Reds must have seen something they liked in him.

As for Gruler, wild guess here, but I'm thinking the Reds took the path I advised, namely, if you like Gruler and Kazmir equally, then pick the cheaper one.

    Regarding Schramek:

    <a href="http://www.goutsa.com/base_gamefiles/teamcume.htm" target="_blank">http://www.goutsa.com/base_gamefiles/teamcume.htm</a>

    <a href="http://www.goutsa.com/player_bios/Baseball/schramek.htm" target="_blank">http://www.goutsa.com/player_bios/Baseball/schramek.htm</a>

I think the announcement of Schramek as a pitcher was a mistake. I checked UTSA's stats for the last two years and he has NOT pitched for them.

He was the Southland POY and he seems to have a good idea of what he is doing at the plate. He walks about the same as he K's, he gets HBP at a Corky Miller like rate, and he hit 400 with some pop.

    Regarding Edens:

    <a href="http://gobaylorbears.fansonly.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/teamcume.html" target="_blank">http://gobaylorbears.fansonly.com/sports/m-basebl/stats/teamcume.html</a>

    <a href="http://gobaylorbears.fansonly.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/edens_kyle00.html" target="_blank">http://gobaylorbears.fansonly.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/edens_kyle00.html</a>

The book on him from BBA is that he is a short righty who throws in the mid 90s. The project him as a reliever. His college stats, in a tough conference, indicate he has solid command to go with his top-notch velocity.

With his stats and the way he lights up the gun, I am guessing he would have been a solid 1st rounder if he were 6'4" instead of 5'11".

    44 JOSEPH VOTTO RICHVIEW COLLEGIATE INSTI C L/R 6'3" 205 09/10/1983 HS

COMMENT: Large, strong frame. Body similar to Darren Fletcher. Fluid uppercut swing. Aggressive hitter who attacks ball. Loose arm with good action and proper rotation. Catches ball and blocks plate. Impressive physical specimen. Hard worker.

    75 KYLE EDENS BAYLOR U RHP R/R 5'10" 200 01/25/1980 4YR 56k | 300k

COMMENT: Medium height. Strong, thick body, similar to Jeff Brantley. No windup, overhand delivery. Fastball above-average velocity, off loose, quick arm. Slider with three-quarter depth. Also throws sinking change away from lefties. Very aggressive with all pitches. Plus stuff when down in zone. Occasional very good arm strength. Confident competitor.

So correct me if I'm wrong. The Reds had four picks in the top 100, and the only drafted 1 player who was rated as one of the top 100 in the draft? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> :o
