CW network to replace UPN & WB

This should have been done years ago

    http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/24/news...ex.htm?cnn=yes

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Warner Brothers and CBS Corp. announced plans Tuesday for the creation of a new broadcast television network, called CW, that would replace the WB and UPN networks in the fall of this year.

The new broadcast network will draw on programming from both WB and UPN, and will be a joint venture between Warner Bros. and CBS (Research), with each company owning 50 percent, officials of both companies said.

"This new network will serve the public with high-quality programming and maintain our ongoing commitment to our diverse audience," said Les Moonves, the chairman of CBS, in a statement (see video).

Prime time programming will target the profitable 18-34 age group, officials of Warner and CBS said.

The new network will broadcast such UPN shows as "America's Next Top Model" and "Veronica Mars," as well as WB programs "Beauty and the Geek" and "Smallville."

In addition, World Wrestling Entertainment's "Smackdown," which has been a mainstay at UPN, is expected to play a role in the schedule. The new fall line up is expected to be announced in May.

UPN and the WB have struggled to attract viewers from the four established networks since they were launched in the mid-1990s. But each has its strengths.

The WB has had some hits throughout its history, particularly with younger audiences, having done well lately with shows such as "Smallville" and "Gilmore Girls."

UPN has recently gained some critical acclaim and strong ratings for its sitcom "Everybody Hates Chris," which airs on Thursday nights and fared well against shows such as NBC's "Joey" and Fox's "The O.C."

Both networks will cease operations in September, broadcasting their respective network schedules independently until then.

Dawn Ostroff, currently president of UPN, will become president of entertainment, and John Maatta, currently chief operating officer of the WB, will become chief operating officer of the CW.

The new network will employ a lot of the same people, "but there will be one person where there used to be two" throughout CW, said James Gross, an analyst with Barrington Research, suggesting that there may be more executive jumbling in the works.

Warner Brothers Entertainment is a division of Time Warner (Research), as is CNNMoney.com.

Re: CW network to replace UPN & WB

I predict a mad scramble among TV stations in markets that have stations affiliated with both of these networks. Picture a game of musical chairs with 2 players, where the loser is guaranteed to lose big money and may not survive another 5 years.

"but there will be one person where there used to be two"

    And probably one station.

    Still a good idea, though.

Yes, they should have done this years ago, it makes it much harder to accomplish now.

In a lot of midsize markets, one of the main affiliate stations ows a WB or UPN. now you have 2 stations competing to own what will become one network. So yeah, it will be a mess, but the resul will be a network that can compete with FOX for the younger audience. ABC and NBC better pay attention, especially ABC.

TRF, you might be interested in this thread on another board, which speculates on how this will shake out in several Texas markets. Sounds like much has already been determined.

EL Paso has no UPN or WB affliates. (Most UHF are spanish) There is a plan to multi-cast WB on the CBS ditigal signal however.

The 2 affiliate deal shouldn't be much problem here in Toledo. Our UPN affiliate is a tiny dump that's barely a notch above public access TV. In fact that's how the station started. Most people who are watching UPN watch the Detroit station. Our WB isn't even over the air, it's a channel owned by and only available on our cable system, so I'd guess the cable system will take over the new CW network and our old UPN station will go back to being independent. Shouldn't have any real effect.

I feel for poor Channel 38 here in Cincy, they tried for years to get on Cable and Satellite as the UPN station, they are still low power compared to WB64, without UPN I see Time Warner/Insight dropping them like a hot potato.

In the Dayton area, Channel 7 owns the UPN station - which is UPN 17 - which you can only get on the Time Warner Cable - and they used that also for alternative local programming. 26 is the WB station.

In interest to probably no one but me, the UPN station in Cleveland is 43. 43 for YEARS and I mean YEARS used to carry Cleveland Indians games. Lots of them. I know they are using another station to carry the "free" games, but here would have been an opportunity for the Indians to really focus in on one 'over the air' station and really dominate the programming. In fact, I would not be shocked with 43 turning into sometype of over-the-air Cleveland sports network - with oodles of live sporting events.

I get UPN on Channel 20; 38 is the Family Channel.

Which portion will pander to the african american market?

The UPN is currently the holder of that and it used to be the the WB and before that FOX.... each uses that marketplace to set roots, each then moves away from that marketplace by tapping the teen market with shiny faced youths.

CW? As in Country Western? Are you sure they're not going to replace CMT?

Or maybe as in conventional wisdom....

well yeah, but for many people, that's not going to be the first thing that pops into their heads when they hear "CW". They should try using something that doesn't already bring a certain association to people's minds. Maybe they should reverse the letters and call it "WC".

    uh....never mind.
