    Hot Stove League show report

Here is the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-25-06. Steve Stewart was the host tonight. The show took place at the 22nd annual La Salle High School sports stag. Steve said it will be 22 days till pitchers and catchers report. Steve was joined by Dave Williams. Steve asked Dave what his feelings were about coming to the Reds. Dave said he was excited to be traded for and wants to let it rip. Steve asked Dave about his shoulder and his opinion on his 2005 season. Dave said he feels like his shoulder injury is behind him and has been for a while. He said his season was cut short last year by a rib injury. Steve said Dave will have opportunity here and he should get a lot of run support here. Dave said that he heard the offense was great and is thankful for the opportunity given to him and hopes to take advantage of it.

After commercial Steve asked Dave about replacing Sean Casey. Dave said being traded for Casey is an honor and exciting. Steve asked him about his pitching style. Dave said that he doesn't prepare any differently to pitch except for Coors Field. Steve mentioned that hitters make adjustments to pitchers and vice versa and asked him about how he would go about that. Dave said he is going to talk to Javy and Jason at ST and get feedback on what the hitters are doing. Steve said PIT came on strong later in the year and asked him his opinion on the Pirates. Dave said he was looking forward to facing them and will battle them like he does any team. Steve asked him about the ownership change and if he met Bob yet. Dave said that he hasn't been there long enough but hopes to meet a lot of nice people on the caravan.

After commercial Steve talked to the Reds Minor League Player of the year Chris Denorfia (Poor guy). Steve rattled off his stats and asked if last year was a dream season for him. Chris said it was and was lucky he was healthy and stayed consistent. Steve asked him if the award was an honor and Chris said it was and he felt he was an underdog and played with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Steve said that the Casey trade was a blessing for him and wanted to know what he thought his chances were of making the team this year. Chris said that was something that isn't up to him and he just wants to go to ST and show them what he's got. Steve asked him about his first big league HR. He said it was overrated and now Marty wants to adopt him (Just kidding) Actually he said it was a thrill and his family got to see him hit it. Steve asked him what his winter was like. Chris said the training facility has been getting more crowded with Reds players lately. Steve asked him how would he describe himself as a player. Chris said scouts describe him as someone who doesn't do anything great but does everything pretty good. Steve said he seems like the kind of player Narron likes i.e. doing the little things right, good baserunning, etc. Chris said that that has been nailed into his head hard with his dad coaching him and playing 4 years in college also helped him be a better teammate and become more fundamentally sound. Steve asked him about players from the Northeast. Chris said it's tough but you can use it to your advantage because in the beginning of the season it can be pretty cold and a lot of players aren't used to that but he is. Steve asked him about playing with Jr. Chris said it's a thrill to play with him as he has collected his baseball cards. Steve asked him what OF position he preferred to play and he said CF but the corner spots are tougher and playing there you can show off your OF skills more.

After commercial Steve talked with Phil Niekro. Phil said he liked coming back to Cincinnati and playing against the Reds since he's from Ohio and the BRM was the best group of players he's ever seen. He said he hated to face Bench and Perez. Bench told him after they retired that the reason he hit well against him was that he didn't look at Phil like he was a knuckleball pitcher but as a breaking ball pitcher who only threw breaking balls.

After commercial Steve talked to Brad Kullman. Steve asked Brad if he'd signed Niekro to a deal. Brad said that he'd like to teach some of the minor league pitchers the knuckler. Steve asked him what the last couple of days have been like. Brad said that people who come see him always say, "He's on the phone again." He said he talked to 17 major league teams yesterday and the rest of them today just touching base with them to see if they are looking for anything. He said the top advisors will be in town the next two days and work through it to see if there are any deals to be made. Steve asked him how difficult it is to make deals now versus what it would be at the winter meetings for example. Brad said it's more difficult now since most teams feel they are set but there may be a few teams out there willing to make a deal. Steve asked him if he was able to hit the ground running when he became GM and Brad said he was and will keep Narron up to date on any possible trades and get his input. Steve asked about this being an audition for the permanent GM job. Brad said that it's difficult because you'd like to make 5 trades and impress Bob but you don't want to make 5 trades that won't work out. He said he wants to be a part of the organization no matter what happens. Steve asked if there was any flexibility in the payroll to add a big salary and Brad said there is. Steve asked him if there's a level of interest in the Reds young players and he said there definitely is.

After commercial Jerry Narron joined Steve. He asked Jerry about Denorfia and he said he was thrilled for him. He plays the game with energy and plays the right way and could be a 4th OFer. Steve asked Jerry about the last few days and what his thoughts were about the upcoming season. Jerry is excited to have someone who has high standards for the organization. Steve asked him if it was an advantage for Bob to have baseball knowledge rather than have an owner who doesn't. Jerry said it's a huge advantage since he's had success in StL. Steve asked Jerry about Dave Williams. Jerry said he's looking forward to seeing him and says from what he hears he will outwork everyone on the staff (That's what we heard about Milton too. My kingdom for a slacker pitcher). Steve asked Jerry about Paul Wilson and Jerry said if everything works out they are looking to use him on April 9 sort of as a 6th starter. He wants him out there at 100% though. Steve asked him about Milton and said he couldn't be any worse than last year. Jerry agreed and said people don't realize how much he competes.

Thus endeth the Reds Hot Stove League show report for 1-25-06. So let it be written. So let it be done.

Give Chip the rep points if you are allowed. He's probably lying in the bed sick to his stomach after listening to all that sugar-coated program.

Chip - always a great read. Thanks.

On Edit - We need a 6th starter?

I was messing around with the archives and found this Hot Stove Report from exactly one year ago at the LaSalle Sports Stag -

It's worth the read. WTG - Chip - and thanks.

Steve Stewart was the host tonight and started off by interviewing Dave Miley. Dave said they had a good nucleus to begin with but with the off season additions everybody is excited to get ready to go to work. Steve asked about Jr. Dave said he'd be 100% by ST and he's going to come in early with the pitchers and catchers. Steve asked if life was good for Dave with the contract extention and a full year under his belt. Dave said it was good for everybody. Steve asked Dave what the biggest improvement to the team was. Dave said it was the bullpen. He also said the bench would be better. Steve asked how is he going to get Freel into the lineup and get all 4 OFers regular playing time. Dave said that the players are going to know coming into ST that they are going to try to give guys like Casey a rest every once in a while. Steve asked about the starting rotation. Dave said guys like Milton, Ortiz and Wilson are guys who can get you deep in the ball game (Wilson? ) And the more innings they can throw, and get to Graves the better off they are. He said you couldn't ask for 3 better pitchers at the top of the rotation. (I wonder if he said that with a straight face?) Steve asked him about Aurelia. Dave said that going into ST he will get an opportunity to compete for the starting job with Lopez. He said he talked with FeLo about it and told him nothing has changed that he is still competing for the starting SS spot. He said that most of the guys they have added have had post season and World Series experience. Steve said if everyone stays healthy, could he work Freel into the lineup. Dave said that Freel brings speed at the top of the lineup which they really don't have elsewhere. He thinks he has a knack of getting guys playing time and keeping them happy. Steve said that all the teams in the division got better and around here the fans are well educated on what the Reds needs are and how they have been met but he said they don't seem to be getting any national attention and does Dave like it that way so they can sneak up on people. Dave said he did and noone has a problem with it. He thinks they are in the toughest division in baseball but they have to work on things like run production and driving in runs when they have opportunities. Steve asked him if he was comfortable with the coaching staff. Dave said he definitely was and it's important to have continuity.

After commercial Steve pimped group tickets and then interviewed Ryan Freel (Look out, Steve! ) Steve asked him about his knee surgery and Ryan said he was doing fine and rehabbing every day and will begin jogging tomorrow. Steve asked if he was going to the Super Bowl since he lived in Jacksonville. He said he wasn't and Jacksonville was kind of a weak city as far as nightlife goes. Steve asked where he saw himself fitting in with the team. Ryan said he'd be waiting his turn. He said that something will probably happen and he'll be ready to play when called on. Steve asked him about playing different positions and Ryan said he liked doing that and being versatile has helped him. Steve asked him if he was excited by the additions. Ryan said it was unbelievable and they really needed pitching and it was a good first step in the right direction. Steve asked him about Milton. Ryan said he was sneaky and deceiving and mixes up his pitches well and will give them some quality innings. Steve asked him if he were extra anxious to get to ST and Ryan said he was because of all the moves. Steve asked if the Reds could compete for the division title. Ryan said absolutely. He said while the other teams were getting weaker, they were getting stronger.

After commercial Steve pimped the Reds HOF voting. He then interviewed Richie Gardner who was named the Reds Minor League Player of the Year. Steve asked him if he was surprised by his success. He said he was somewhat and he went out and played and did well. Steve asked him if he took pride in his control and Richie said he did and that's very important at a higher level cause if you don't have control you aren't going to do well at all. Steve asked if he improved from minor league spring training to the end of the season. Richie said he most definitely did and the coaches were great and they didn't just help him with mechanics but also with the mental aspects of the transition from college to the pros. He thought he was really locked in and in a groove at the end of the season. Steve asked him where he would start this year and did he think he might make it to the Show if he pitched well enough. Richie said he didn't know and he was going to go out and pitch and whatever happens, happens. Steve asked him about some of the guys he played with in Chattanooga and if some of them may be in the Show before long. Richie said that team had a lot of talent and EdE is really good, is a solid IFer and a great hitter and Bergollla is good too. He said the older guys took him under their wing and showed him the ropes. Steve asked him what his reaction was when he found out he was Player of the Year. Richie said he had a big smile and was really happy and pleased the Reds gave him that award. He is amazed how far he's gone. Steve asked him about the off season transactions and if he was following them. Richie said he was a little bit but he understood what they were trying to do.

After commercial Steve interviewed Tom Seaver. Tom said he has a lot of fond memories of Cincinnati and it's a terrific baseball town and he always felt there was something special about Cincy and StL. Since they are river cities baseball is really part of people's lives. Tom said he actually played in Crosley Field when he was a rookie and he watched a day game with the Reds and Pirates and watched how the Reds pitched Roberto Clemente and it was the opposite of how the Mets said to pitch him. Steve asked him if it helped him. Tom said it did until he faced him. Steve asked him what it was like to be traded from the Mets to the Reds. Tom said he was very happy to get out of NY and leave the guy he was working for who was a real jerk towards him. Tom said he actually questioned who he thought he was for joining the Greenwich Country Club and that's what kind of a guy he was. He said the Mets began to implode at that time and if he hadn't been traded he'd never won 300 games. Steve asked Tom about the memories he had pitching here. Tom said it was very special pitching here because of the group of people there like Bench and Morgan. He also thought it was a great move from a family standpoint so his family could see what it was like in Middle America and how different it was from Greenwich, CT. Steve said that he had a great year the year he was traded here. Tom said that he made a big mistake one year when he came out of Florida and got the flu late in ST. The team started off poorly and he begged John MacNamara to get him in there cause he couldn't stand watching them while he wasn't pitching and he hurt his shoulder bad that year and had a bad year. He said he has really great memories here cause it was a great organization and had great players and great fans. Steve asked him about any Opening Day memories. Tom said it was very special stuff here. Opening Day is kinda of ther same everywhere cause of the energy of a packed house and the athletes are like horses in the starting gate who are raring to go. Steve asked him what he was up to and he said he was living in Napa Valley doing some work in the vineyards making wine. He's also doing 50 TV games with the Mets.

After commercial Steve interviewed DanO. Steve asked if he sensed a lot of excitement around town. DanO said he has and wherever you go whether it's the grocery store or a speaking engagement it's outstanding. Steve asked if he got what he wanted and more during the off season. DanO said he thought they addressed every one of their needs during the offseson and if they had tried to go after Milton at the beginning of the offseason before making all the moves they did, they probably wouldn't have been successful. Steve said the criticism of Milton was that he gives up a lot of HRs and what were his strengths and weaknesses and how does he contribute to the club. DanO said don't isolate one year cause he used to pitch in MIN which is a bandbox and he didn't give up that many HRs. He said the HRs Milton gave up last year proves the PHI ballpark is the most offensive park in the game. (Evidently DanO has never heard of Coors Field or Minute Maid Park) He thinks Milton will revert to his old form here. Steve asked about Ortiz. DanO said that he is a 13-16 game winner on a regular basis. He has very good stuff, has 3 pitches, challenges hitters - almost to a fault - but he knows how to win and is a great competitor. Steve asked him about the Aurelia pickup. DanO said Rich is more excited than the Reds are since he sees it as an opportunity to reestablish himself. He thinks Rich can get back to the player he was before. Steve asked if the Reds could compete with the Cards, Cubs and Astros. DanO said they certainly think they are in a better position to do that and the Cards have to be the favorites since they went to the World Series. HOU was in the playoffs and the Cubs are a good ball club. But the Reds will not give any quarter against those teams.

"(Kullman) said he wants to be a part of the organization no matter what happens."

That's what I call a team player. Not too surprising, though, since he stayed onboard after his last interim stint.

Speaking of team players, Chip deserves the RedsZone team's appreciation for compiling and posting another great report.

Surpisingly, I thought Narron would stick up for Milton more than that... something like, he had a bad year but we all know he's better than that... or something roughly equivalent.

And what does he mean by "people don't realize how much he competes"? I like to think that every one of the Reds players compete. I guess that makes it okay if he pitches lousey... he's a great competitor. Kinda like "Richie" is a veteran presence.

I had a problem with Dave Williams saying he wants to "let it rip".

That doesn't seem like a wise choice of words for a pitcher in the Reds organization.

Brad said that he'd like to teach some of the minor league pitchers the knuckler.
Was this said in jest, or was he serious? Because I think it's an idea worth serious consideration...

Phil Niekro, 300-game winner and Hall-of-Famer, was the master of ceremonies for the LaSalle Sports Stag where they broadcast from last night. My guess is he was just making comments like that b/c Phil Niekro was there.

But with the pitching the REDS have had in this millenium, I be willing to try anything... knucklers, different hair gel, shaved heads, beards, etc, etc.
