They should only use that name if this guy can be the mascot:

There has been talks for years about "getting the Devil out of town". A few years ago when I was down there the world devil was hardly seen anywhere at games. So if I was to guess they will officially change it to just the Tampa Bay Rays.

I agree to drop the "Devil". I think "Stingrays" would be cool - that's a ocean-type moniker that would keep the name.

I do not like the idea of the Tampa Bay Tarpons, which would be a homage to the long time team in the Florida State League. The Tarpons would & could be easier to "make fun of" by dropping the "r" for a "m". Although that would be a marketing/give-a-way beyond bad-taste.

When I lived in the area there was a lot of debate and in fact PUBLIC OUTCRY when the team was named "Devil Rays"...even though it is a fish...people thought it would be better to name them the "Stingrays" and an advertising agency I worked for went as far as mocking up logo's uniforms and about a dozen marketing angles for the team to consider...needless to say, they kept the other name.

If they use "Stingrays" as the nickname, they could then consider using as a symbol a '63 split-window, or maybe a '65 fuelie, or maybe an early 70's LT1. Corvette used the Stingray name from 1963 through 1976.

Along that same line, what about the Tampa Bay Inferno?

    That actually sounds pretty cool
