Mighty no more - team to change its name to Anaheim Ducks next season
posted January 27 @ 12:55, EST
ANAHEIM, Calif. (CP) - The Anaheim Mighty Ducks are Mighty no more.
The NHL club said Friday it will change its name to the Anaheim Ducks starting next season, dropping Mighty from the moniker after nearly two thirds of fans surveyed said they supported the switch.
The team is also considering changes to its logo, identity and uniforms.
"The process is still very much underway and we do not expect to be ready to make any further announcements until the end of the season," owner Henry Samueli said in a release.
The Mighty Ducks nickname was widely ridiculed when Walt Disney Company, the club's original owner, announced it after the expansion team was granted for the 1993-94 season.
Disney was looking to capitalize on the popularity of its hit 1992 movie, The Mighty Ducks starring Emilio Estevez, by linking its new team with it.
Eventually the Mighty Ducks name became just as accepted as other nicknames initially panned, like the Penguins, and fans wanted the team to retain a link to the original.
"In selecting the name the Anaheim Ducks," said Samueli, "we are respecting the heritage of a tremendous organization that has been a very important and visible part of the community, not to mention Western Conference champions and a Stanley Cup finalist."
The name change came after months of research by a public relations firm which included telephone surveys of season-ticket holders.
"While there was support for keeping the current name, the majority of those surveyed, nearly two thirds, supported some sort of name change," David Paine, CEO of PainePR, said in a release. "At the same time, the research found strong support generally for preserving the history of the team in some way."

If they must change the team name to something having to do with the local fauna, there are a lot better other choices than Devil Rays. The place is overrun with these HUGE roaches called Palmetto Bugs. There are stories in the paper about once a month of alligators eating someone's dog or sister, but then again, the U of Florida probably has the lock on anything Allligatorish. There certainly are sharks in the area, but the ownership may be scared that will scare away the tourists. I guess after all this I'm at a loss for what to call them.
How about Tourists?
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!
"How about Tourists?"
Well there certainly are plenty of those. For that I guess the mascot would be an 80 year old guy in plaid shorts and knee high black socks, with a T-Shirt saying "Is it always this Hot?"
