Marlins' AGM Hill Not a Reds GM Candidate; Marlins' Jennings Refuses to Comment

    HILL STAYING PUT

Marlins Assistant General Manager and Cincinnati native Michael Hill turned down a chance to interview for the Reds' vacant general manager job. Monday Hill said the Reds had sought permission to speak with him, but he told them he was happy in his current post and looked forward to building another championship club with the Marlins.

While he is not among the Reds' initial list of seven candidates, many expect the Marlins' vice president of player personnel, Dan Jennings, to interview for the position. The Marlins would not reveal whether the Reds have sought permission to speak with him.

Gonna take a long time before potential GM's start to look at the Reds as a real opportunity and not a waste of time.

These are strange days in MLB. It's not just the Reds. Ass. GMs seem to be turning down GM interviews all over the place. Maybe that's why we've got this new abbreviation for all the happy lieutenants out there.

I'm surprised that a few guys haven't figured out the supply/demand curve here and decided to go in and ask for the moon (I'm talking about control more than money). Who knows, you might get it.

The good news is that the FO was looking at some talent in going after Hill...the other thing about Asst. GM's turning jobs down...so many of the clubs are in "TURN AROUND" mode that they really need to have a solid vision of what they would do with current personnel and what talent to bring in...if not...they are really in a bind...The Reds have to rebuild the minors and the MLB team...gotta believe that would not be the best situation for someone to walk into.

I wonder what Mr. Castellini is thinking now that he has been turned down a couple of times. I'm sure he is not tickled that people do not want to even interview to get their name out there. WOW.... Maybe he needs to go ahead and clean a little more house.
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

It's not that confusing to me why the best of the assistant GM's are not interested in this job. Bear with me on this. Like Dan O'Brien or not, he was given a mandate to build from within and develop the minor leagues. Then a "hands-on" owner comes in, says he's impatient by nature, and fires him despite his doing what he had been directed to do. If you are a Michael Hill, Chris Antonelli, or any other quality assistant GM who has been brought up under the philosophy that you do things the right way, is that a situation you want to find yourself in? I know we are all in the "In Bob We Trust" mode right now, but I think that Mr. Castellini's personality and obvious intention to be hands-on will keep the good candidates away.

If this is the case, then perhaps this will leave only the candidates who are confident enough in their own ideas and abilities to believe that they can be the person (pardon the subject/verb non-agreement) who can do the job. Maybe this will leave only the candidates who are self-possessed enough to know they can turn the team around.

And maybe this is exactly the type of person the Reds need in the job.

    Who knows?

Perhaps some of these "men" and I use that lightly, should buck up and interview for the position. It's the highest you can go in this business and I would think it be the ultimate dream for any of these guys. I don't get it.

Crazy times, just like M2 said.
This is the time. The real Reds organization is back.

Good question. I can't help but wonder if John Allen has any impact on whether these candidates are interested in the Reds. I know Castellini has reorganized the FO so that baseball operations report directly to him...but nonetheless...Allen is still around and will have an impact on what they can and cannot do as GM's. There is also always the possibility that RCast will put baseball operations back under Allen at some point.

I found this in Ken Rosenthal's column on TSN.

"New Reds owner Bob Castellini made his first curious move by hiring former Expos and Orioles GM Jim Beattie as an adviser and identifying him as a candidate to be GM. The Reds need to do better than Beattie, whose low-key, deliberate style is too similar to that of fired GM Dan O'Brien.

A bold, dynamic leader is required to perform the team's necessary overhaul, and though the timing of O'Brien's firing was unusual, Castellini does not lack good candidates. "

I think right now any hot GM candidate still sees the Reds as a waste of time, the owners will meddle and the budget will be junk.

Casto needs to prove that wrong.
