    Tax related question

What steps do you have to take when your company doesn't get your W-2 form to you by January 31?
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

I had that happen to me once about 12 or so years ago. My company went out of business and I didn't get one so I filled out some supplemental form and that was sufficient.

By law, W-2s must be mailed no later than January 31. If you don't have it in a few days then I'd be a bit more worried.

The Mrs didn't get a w2 from a job once, we just used the final pay stub of the year for the numbers.

Yeah, but don't you have to actually send the W2 form in? Or do they let you photocopy the stub?

I'd be worried in a couple days - but it doesn't hurt to call. Where I work, we get calls all the time. Of course, most of the time it's because the former employee moved and we don't have their current address.

If you file with Tax Cut or Turbo Tax and send it over the internet, you do not have to worry about sending the W-2 (there is a fee of $19.99 for this method). And you can normally file with the state over the phone.

I did my taxes early last week and used these methods for Federal and State. Don't like the gov't hangin' on to my money any longer than they already have!

Best to have that copy of the W-2 if they come to audit though.
