Felix Rodriguez signs with the Nationals

    From Rotoworld:
    Felix Rodriguez - R - Nationals

Nationals agreed to terms with RHP Felix Rodriguez on a one-year, $600,000 contract.
He can make $600,000 more in roster bonuses: $200,000 each if he is on the 40-man roster on March 29, May 1 and Aug. 1. It's a relative bargain, even with the bonuses added in. Rodriguez is coming off a lousy year with the Yankees and his stuff isn't quite what it was, but he posted ERAs of 3.10, 3.43 and 3.00 from 2002-04. He should be a useful middle reliever for the Nats. Jan. 31 - 8:27 pm et

There had been speculation that he overplayed his hand a bit by waiting so long. It caused the Cards, at least, to move on a minor league contract for Jeff Nelson rather than wait for him. When the Cards were interested though, I doubt that these would have been the terms he would have agreed to. The Rockies were also after him apparently lately.

The Cardinals were talking to Rodriguez about a month ago, and I was hoping he would sign with them.

I would have preferred the Reds toss 600K at him instead of White

Exactly my thought. Younger, live arm, better career numbers, I assume he was hurt quite a bit of last year, so a great candidate for bouneback (just for you DanO )

Rodriguez would have been a good signing for the Reds. White is just well... not.

Agreed...if they were going to throw $600,00 on a bullpen arm, this should have been the one.

Good signing by the Nats who play in a pitcher-friendly park. $600k is a steal if he performs at all like he did prior to '05.
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it.

Is that what you are telling me...beacuse White lives or was raised in OH, he is more wanted?

I know it's sarcasm...but it is a typical Reds (and sometimes Bengals) reason for signing a player. I guess no one else wants to play for them unless they live near the area.

It'll be $1.2 million if he's still on the team by August, but it doesn't change the point much.

Some players have made geographical decisions, like Griffey wanting to be closer to Orlando, but to frequently see that mentioned when signing fringe players, it just seems like they are targeting guys moreso for where they live rather than how they'll perform. I'm sure some of it is sportswriters propagating a myth, but then who knows with the track record of the Reds FO.

    I can throw a 70-mph fastball - according to the Reds I'm worth 600K.

I just don't have the "veteran experience".

If guys like Felix and Jeff Nelson are worth $600K then why are we throwing that kind of $$ at Rick White?

Jeff Nelson signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals.
