I'm surprised nobody has made the distinction between beauty and attraction. There are many women who I think are absolutely gorgeous aesthetically, but to whom I feel absolutely no attraction -- or even repulsion in some cases (ie. Brittany Spears). Further, we are attracted to those things which we value.
I think there are societal (and biological) norms of attractiveness, such as symmetry and health. However, attractiveness varies wildly. WoY's point, is more to the notion that the inferrence is often made incorrectly, or implicitly suggested, that only those who are aesthetically pleasing are attractive, and thus valuable.
It's a very fine line and our language is often too muddy to make the distinction. That said, I think it's pretty obvious that this conversation is purely about the differences in aesthetic appreciation. Many of us are married to people who we are very attracted to but whom we don't think should be on the cover a magazine.
That's all I'm gonna contribute, because quite frankly I think I'm pretty much standard --- Natalie Portman, Alyssa Milano, Scarlett Johannson being at the top of my list...

I am attracted to any woman that is a sports fan, although mainly basketball and baseball. First place I took my wife out was to a basketball game.Originally Posted by RedsManRick
No. that was the one where they had a woman who had undergone plastic surgery to make her not ugly any more. They didn't show the faces of the doctors and nurses and when they finally took the bandages off of her she was blonde and beautiful but everyone thought the operation was a failure because they all looked kind of like pigs.Originally Posted by Danny Serafini

Easy pick, Squid from the Lunchicks.
That's her on the right.
And in the center.
Can't seem to keep her tongue in her mouth ... not that I'd mind.
On the topic of whether this is a sexist topic, I lean toward no. If you take the discussion of beauty off the table then you leave it in the hands of those who'd try to force their notion of beauty down your throat. I was raised by a feminist, but over time it was militance over topics like this (and the denigration of those women who chose to raise families) that soured her on the larger movement.
As a general rule, the world should be constantly striving to find beauty in unlikely or non-standard people and places.

Valid point, from my wifes POV (at least here on the coast) that tends to extend to the woman who chose to be with men. It's a pretty interesting dynamic that is fraught with its own stereotypes as well.(and the denigration of those women who chose to raise families)

Sarandon...good one. I know a lot of guys who don't find her attractive at all. I've always thought she was very sexy.Originally Posted by M2
