Can't report on things that aren't happening.

At last report, the Reds are hopeful to have a choice made by the end of this week, so stay tuned.

For the team, it's good this information isn't in the papers for many reasons. Perhaps they're interested in someone who is with another team and doesn't want the team or public to know they're thinking about leaving.

The last two publicly-acknowledged interviews take place today. There is speculation that a short list of candidates will then be brought back for a second round of interviews. In any event, the team's stated goal is to have a permanent GM in place "by the end of the week."

im just sayin, you would think they would be able to report on something, anything. you think they would go 3 days in la or ny or chi or anywhere without reporting something when their team is searching for a gm

This is not LA or NY. This is the best baseball town in America. Maybe that is why the process is going smoothly right now. I have no problem not knowing what is going on. Rumors are not good and that is what the paper would create right now.

Hang tough and when the decision is made we will all know abou it.

Right now, there is no news to report. The final rounds of interviews are to be done this week and the team is hopeful to have a choice made this week.

You can only write so many stories about that. If they were to write any more than that, it would either be redundant or made up and not too many people in these parts like to read made up news.

I'm with you in the fact that I like to read local Reds coverage. But when there isn't any news, there just isn't any news.

Hang in there.....it shouldn't be too much longer.

According to Hal McCoy of The Dayton Daily News, the list of candidates for the open Cincinnati Reds general manager job will be reduced to two or three on Feb. 7, and those candidates will be invited back for second interviews. A decision is expected by Feb. 13.

    Dayton Daily News

CINCINNATI | It appears the general manager candidate search is over for the Cincinnati Reds and the paring process begins today.

Reds special adviser Leland Maddox and Atlanta assistant general manager Frank Wren were interviewed Monday, the last two of nine candidates.

The list will be reduced to two or three today and those candidates will be invited back this week for second interviews. A decision is expected by next Monday, three days before pitchers and catchers report to spring training in Sarasota, Fla.

There is a possibility that there may not be a second round of interviews and that a winner will be picked from the first round of interviews.

The candidates: Minnesota assistant general manager Wayne Krivsky, Reds interim GM Brad Kullman, Reds special adviser Jim Beattie, Philadelphia assistant GM Mike Arbuckle, St. Louis assistant GM John Moseliak, Reds director of international scouting Johnny Almaraz, Chicago White Sox director of player development David Wilder, Maddox and Wren.

    Prediction:

Wren blew them away and gets the job.

    Reds interview two more
BY KEVIN KELLY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The Reds met Monday with two more candidates for the general manager's job.

Braves assistant GM Frank Wren and Reds special assistant to the GM Leland Maddox were the last of nine confirmed candidates to interview since the process began one week ago.

Team officials now are expected to decide if there is a consensus favorite or a need to conduct a second round of interviews with a group of finalists.

The seven other confirmed candidates are Reds director of international scouting and player development Johnny Almaraz, Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle, Reds special adviser Jim Beattie, Twins assistant GM Wayne Krivsky, Reds interim GM Brad Kullman, Cardinals assistant GM John Mozeliak and White Sox director of player development David Wilder.

    'Stealth' candidate for Reds

By Marc Lancaster / Post staff reporter

The Reds have publicly acknowledged eight candidates for their general manager opening, but at least one person not on that list has interviewed for the job.

David Wilder, director of player development for the World Series champion Chicago White Sox, confirmed Friday that he was in Cincinnati earlier this week for an interview. Wilder declined to comment any further.

The decision to keep the interview quiet was Wilder's. The Reds said when the search began that they would make public the names of the candidates coming in for interviews as long as those individuals didn't object. Though Wilder was a publicly announced candidate for the Boston Red Sox general manager's job last fall, he wanted to try to keep his interest in the Reds' opening under wraps. Indications are the proximity to the start of spring training was Wilder's main concern.

Wilder interviewed with the Reds the last time they had a GM vacancy, following the 2003 season. He didn't make the cut from a group of eight men that interviewed down to three finalists, but was hired by the White Sox shortly thereafter. He has spent the last two seasons overseeing Chicago's minor league and Latin American opera- tions.

Before joining the White Sox, Wilder spent 2000-03 with the Milwaukee Brewers, first as vice president of player personnel and later as a special assignment scout. In 2000, he was a member of USA Baseball's selection committee that put together the team that won the gold medal at the Sydney Olympics.

Prior to his time in Milwaukee, Wilder served as the Chicago Cubs' farm director for three seasons (1996-98) and assistant general manager for one year (1999). He also worked in various capacities, mostly in scouting, for the Atlanta Braves from 1991-95.

An outfielder in his playing days, Wilder never made it to the majors. But he did spend seven years in the minors for the Cubs and Oakland Athletics. He retired in 1989 and spent 1990 as a scout and Class A pitching coach for the A's.

The eight acknowledged candidates for the Reds' vacancy are Reds director of international scouting and player development Johnny Almaraz, Philadelphia Phillies assistant GM Mike Arbuckle, Reds special adviser Jim Beattie, Minnesota Twins assistant GM Wayne Krivsky, Reds director of major league operations Brad Kullman, Reds special assistant to the GM Leland Maddox, St. Louis Cardinals assistant GM John Mozeliak and Atlanta Braves assistant GM Frank Wren.

Reds CEO Bob Castellini has said he would like to have a general manager in place by the end of next week.

If I had to bet on finalists, I'd guess Wren and Wayne Krivsky will be in there. Can't get a good enough feel for how the others might fit in at this point. Guess we'll have to wait and see...

Wren, Kullman, Krivsky and Mozeliak for the final four is my guess.
