I guess you can get arrested for anything now.

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A former Escambia County middle school gym teacher who allegedly let children pay a $1 a day bribe to skip gym class turned himself in Thursday.

Detectives had been looking for Terence Braxton after he apparently left the area.

The sheriff's office said he turned himself in earlier Thursday at a Pensacola jail on bribery charges and was released on his own recognizance.

Escambia County School District spokesman Ronnie Arnold says the principal of Ward Middle School learned of the scheme from a parent and began an investigation in December. The principal then contacted authorities and placed Braxton on administrative leave.

    Braxton then resigned.

After that, Braxton taught some classes as a substitute teacher at the Atmore School District in Alabama. That district removed Braxton from its substitute list after Florida officials notified administrators of Braxton's history.

The official charges accuse Ward of taking about $230 from six students pursuing charges, but Braxton's actual take from the 250 sixth-to-eighth-grade boys and girls is likely much greater.

A teacher who promotes skipping class by taking a payoff from early teen students? Good Lord... this man should never be allowed in a classroom or near a school again.

    bribe (n)
    (1) Something, such as money or a favor, offered or given to a person in a position of trust to influence that person's views or conduct.
    (2) Something serving to influence or persuade.

Sounds like his actions are the definition of bribery. I am glad he has been stopped.

Of all the classes I would have liked to bribe my way out of gym was not one of them. I always looked forward to gym. Now algebra on the other hand...

Gym sucked at my high school -- we had this ex-football player who seemed perpetually mad at life, at least utnil someone screwed off in class. Then he took special glee in telling whoever the guilty culprit was to: "Do pushups until I get tired."

Physical Education, as it is currently taught to students, is a total waste of time. Most places consider it's funding to be "buy a couple of kickballs" and "resurface the gym" and nothing beyond that. Students, especially in high school, would be much better served to be taught proper workout routines and given a requirement to do a certain number of after-school hours on free weights and/or exercise machines.

That certainly promotes a more healthy lifestyle then simply telling everyone "go toss the football around" or "here are some basketballs, go shoot hoops"

What's the big deal. Geeks can afford that easily.

Consider how many kids seemed to get out of gym when I was in school, I wonder if the teacher was on the "take" back then...
