I know this isn't going to go down well but the constanting carping of having Womack and Aurilla on the roster is really overdone.
There is a very good reason why you don't bring in a young talented position player to sit on the bench - look at what happened to WMP. If EE doesn't make the team out of ST then I don't want him sitting on the bench if he can play everyday in AAA. No use him fielding grounders and taking BP everyday with the occassional pinch hit. If EE makes the team then its good to have RA on the bench as he really doesn't need to be in AAA still learning things. Womack on the hand is covering a position which (although people here love him) Freel just can't play everyday. In much the same mould as Randa last year there is a young second baseman who is probably a year away from the the majors. Olmedo and Machado are good defensively but if your going to bring them in to pinch hit you may as well send out the pitcher.
The 25 man is not the best or most talented 25 players in the REDS system. Its the best 8 position players, the 5 best starting pitchers, 7 relievers and 5 players who suit the needs of the team in game situations.
The point is neither can Womack, his game is weak and his place on the Reds roster means that a better player is losing out and the Reds in turn are losing out.Womack on the hand is covering a position which (although people here love him) Freel just can't play everyday.
Tony Womack came up on turf and had a speed game, he's had 1 above average season since he's moved off SS and even that was borderline good. Now he's 36 years old and on his 6th team in 4 seasons.
Defending Womack's game and what he can give the Reds in the long term is baseball Gallipoli.
I think that's down the river from Marietta??Originally Posted by westofyou

Womack is an improvement on Freel in that it gives the REDS an adequate everyday 2B for the year. Next year it will hopefully be Bergolla.Originally Posted by westofyou

Does it include the offense lost in the final summation?
What's adequate?
In my world Tony Womack doesn't qualify as an adaquate backup much alone a adaquate starting 2nd baseman, what on earth makes him so darn adaquate?
His fielding percentage is about average for the position and his BA is slightly higher than average. His OBP doesn't compare to Freel. But then I have no problem that Freel is a good player but he isn't an everyday player as showed up last year.
Oh joy, my two favorite metrics. His fielding percentage is about average for the position and his BA is slightly higher than average.

Womack was easily the worst position player in all of baseball last year.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!
Really, what more needs to be said? a guy off the street could do just as good a job.Originally Posted by savafan

I think you all might be a bit surprised at how well Womack is going to play this season.
Welcome to the board Mr. Womack.Originally Posted by WilyMo

If Womack matches the best season of his career he is still worse than Freel. So I could really care less if Womack surprises because he stinks and should not be getting at-bats. I don't want him to surprise anyone because it would mean we are wasting at-bats on the guy.Originally Posted by WilyMo
