    Beckham: I can't do six-year-old son's homework

LONDON(AFP) - England football captain David Beckham confessed he is befuddled by his six-year-old son Brooklyn's maths homework in an interview.

Beckham, 30, admitted to being baffled when Brooklyn recently asked for help with a school assignment and had to turn to his former Spice Girls pop star wife Victoria to help out.

"Their homework is so hard these days. I sat down with Brooklyn the other day -- and I was like, 'Victoria, maybe you should do the homework tonight'.

"I think it was maths, actually. It's done totally differently to what I was teached when I was at school, and you know, I was like, 'Oh my God, I can't do this'.

Brooklyn was like, 'Please do it with me', and I'm like, 'I'll read your book with you'."

The Real Madrid midfielder's son attends the exclusive Runnymede College in the Spanish capital, which follows the British national curriculum.

The Mail on Sunday gave examples of some national curriculum maths questions set for seven-year-olds.

They include: "Bet went to the shop at 11:45. She came back half an hour later. What time did she come back?" and "What is 12 divided by three?"

Beckham also admitted he has no "lucky" pre-match routines, with them too being tough to remember.

"I find that if I follow a routine ... it gets to the stage where you are thinking, 'Right, was it the left side ... the left boot I put on first, or the right side?'

"There are so many things that can go through your mind."

Beckham is set to skipper England in Wednesday's friendly against Uruguay at Liverpool's Anfield stadium.

When you have to ask Posh Spice for math help, you should consider confining yourself to your home.

I seriously wonder if he's done too many headers.

The man was playing soccer instead of hitting the books, IIRC many stars are put in special soccer programs early on.

Very sad, it's not too late Dave.. you can hire a maid to do Brooklyn's homework.

Or get Brooklyn put in one of those special soccer programs.

    Call me cynical.

This smells like something that his publicist threw out there to give the guy some appeal to cockneys and other blue collars of the world.

There are plenty of athletes that can't do short division, but he never struck me as this type.

Agreed. He has always struck me as intelligent during his interviews. He also tends toward self-depreciating humor. I would guess that he was joking around, and somebody ran with it.

For such a big star he is pretty comfortable with self-deprecation and tells a lot of jokes about something stupid he has said or done. I have seen him do this at his youth soccer camps. It really relaxes the campers who are in awe of him, and I wouldn't be surprised if he coaches some day.

He would make an excellent coach. I also find it hard to believe he can't do his son's homework; he is always self-deprecating and I think that was the case here. The English press can be brutal and will take any little thing and turn it into a scandal.

I have an instructional DVD that he put out. I was VERY impressed with how good he was with the kids in the video. He seemed to really be enjoying himself.

Here's two jokes that relate to Beckham's mathematical abilities:

Poor Brooklyn is stuck on his maths homework.

"Dad," he yells, "will you help me with my homework?"

"I don't know, son," says David. "It wouldn't really be right, now, would it?"

"Probably not, Dad," replies Brooklyn. "But have a go anyway."

"You," shouts Alex Ferguson at David in front of the whole Manchester United team, "are so stupid! I'm going to ask you a simple question and if you can't answer it you're out of the team!"

    "OK, boss," says David, shamefaced.

    "Right, what's two plus two?"

    "Er, is it four, boss?"

"Oh!" cry the rest of the team. "Give him another chance!"
