Tim McCarver: Baseball Quotes
I remember one time going out to the mound to talk with Bob Gibson. He told me to get back behind the batter, that the only thing I knew about pitching was that it was hard to hit.
Hume's in the bullpen, right?
...the 2-2 to Woodsen and here it comes...and it is swung on and missed! And Tom Browning has pitched a perfect game! Twenty-seven outs in a row, and he is being mobbed by his teammates, just to the thirdbase side of the mound.
I keep hoping Wagner can become the closer, but I am not sure he has the mentality. So, I am with the others...I go with Coffey.
If he ever gets his head on straight and his control in line, Wagner will be lights out. Coffee seems like he could be a decent closer until that happens.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.
Coffey has the potential, but we have never seen him do it. To be the closer, you have to have more than stuff. He has to have the bulldog mentality. I am curious to see who on this staff has it. I would have liked to have seen the club bring in a veteran closer to help develop one of the young guys for the job, but I guess it wasn't on their list of priorities. When Wagner is going well, he is lights out, but has not shown the mentality. My guess is that they will go again with closer by committee and let someone take the job with their performance.
BigRed,
Coffey was the closer in AAA and AA if I'm not mistaken
Coffey was pretty rough last year guys. Unless he's improved, which definitely isn't out of the question, I don't think he's worthy of the closer's role.
RedsFan 75: You're right, he was a closer in the minor leagues and had impressive numbers as far as I know. However, that's still not the same as doing it in the big leagues. Many people dominate in AAA and never make it in the bigs. I hope that he can be an all star, I just think we need to see it before we declare him to be the man.
Wagner if he can get his head together.....but that's a process, that will take time.
Coffey right now.
