Thread: Pete Rose on Bill Maher

    Pete Rose on Bill Maher

Don't know if anyone caught this, but Petey did a satellite interview on Real Time with Bill Maher this past Friday, mainly with regard to the Barry Bonds situation. He came off better than he has in most press over the last couple years--affable, pretty funny--but, tellingly, was doing the show from a casino floor in Vegas.

    Ah, Pete.

For crying out loud, does the guy not have a publicist? Or anyone with a brain in his general vicinity?

He's workin' for a living. He's made no bones about where he has to be to scrape up a dollar or two. Plus he lives in LA now.

Cincinnati's not exactly a hotbed for Pete Rose's services.
Some people play baseball. Baseball plays Jay Bruce.

What's he doing these days? I admit that I don't really keep up with his pursuits...still, even if he works at a blackjack table, it seems like he could have maybe stepped into a hotel room for an interview.

Oh man. How long til the season starts again?

Pete was cracking himself up in a big way, he also sidestepped the whole greenie issue, played dumb about it and called himself with regards to greenies, "The cleanest son of a Buck out there."

    My favorite statement was this.

"Todays players are only out there for the money, not to entertain the fans."

Last I heard he works at his own sports memorabilia shop which is somewhere inside the Caesar's Palace shops in Las Vegas.

I still maintain that's Pete's notoriety as the guy banned from baseball has set him up as a novelty act, meaning that he can probably sell MORE autographs that way. Thus, his repeated attempts to sabotage his own cause.

That's what he said, and that he signs autographs about 15 days a month there.

He kept breaking himself up, even got in a good one on Cheney.

Speaking of ex-Reds on HBO, the same night Bryant Gumbel did a story about Danny Graves on "Real Sports." He went w/ Danny and his mom to Vietnam, so she could visit relatives she hadn't seen in over 30 years.

I saw the interview on Friday night and was amazed at how Pete still just doesnt get it. I think Pete still does not think the whole gambling thing was that big a deal. However did love the quote "Maybe I should have taken steroids, could have had 6,000 damn hits". WOY, your right about Pete cracking himself up, it was pretty amusing at how much of a kick Pete was getting out of himself.

Yeah, Pete didn't seem to realize how amused Maher was at Pete's self-amusement. I agree, the "6,000 damn hits" line was priceless, but I think the general thread consensus may be true. Having money on a game you're managing (one way or the other) may not affect it as much as Bonds's insane 'roid regimen (that SI excerpt is beyond belief), but affect it in many ways it does.

Did those relatives complement mom on what a nice daughter she's raised?

He WAS looking like someone's rather plump aunt w/ his diamond studs, glasses and 'flip' hairdo.

As much of a cardiac arrest Danny was as a closer. I like to remember his over all contributions and do not feel the need to mock his decline. Best Wishes Danny boy welcome to the rest of life , hope its smooth sailing.
