Thursday is a big day -

Carlos Pena's future as a Detroit Tigers first baseman is no more, or less, certain this week than it was when spring training convened a month ago. Various reports have suggested Pena will be released Thursday, the final day players under contract for 2006 can be jettisoned for one-sixth of the salary owed them. -- Detroit News

Carlos Pena is not coming to Cincinnati, that is not why Thursday is a big day.

Thursday is a day that can be a benefit to the Reds and either Eric Milton, Tony Womack, or whomever they feel necessary to cut. The dollars will not be as hurtful, if the cut is done on Thursday.

In reality, nothing is going to happen. However, the thought is out there.

Wow! I never heard about that rule.

I'm thoroughly surprised that the Reds haven't taken advantage of it in years past. And even more suprised that they won't take advantage of it this year... but like you said, we all know they won't.

Sounds like a gift to me.

That rule does not apply to players on multi-year deals (like Milton). I'm not sure if it applies to Womack either. Generally it's for player who are inside the free agency window.

How does a contract guarantee play in this? Does Womack (for example) have a guaranteed contract?

Reds owe Eric Milton whether he plays for them or not.

If cut, we either owe him everything on his contract (if he doesn't play) or everything on his contract less the major league minimum salary (if he's picked up by another club)

    this isn't the NFL

Womack is in the 2nd year of a 2 year deal and the Reds are on the hook to pay him a cool million. I still wish they'd just cut him.

I think they did with Jose Guillen the spring of his breakout year but they ended up re-signing him to a minor league deal. Likewise with John VanderWal.
