Almost disappointed to hear about the 5 Ks since he came in. I don't want any portion of the Reds to be tempted to bring him north. And given the other options for the rotation, I think they are going to start being tempted.

Yeah, you know the idea of going out and trading one of our precious outfielders for MLB pitching is insane. Insane I tell ya. You know those outfielders will nab us future young aces (if we just *wait*).

Gosling wasn't making the team anyway without doing a serious Warren Spahn impression. He has options, and the options game almost always wins out.

Doc Scott.....can you help me with that? My understanding is that the Reds claimed Gosling off waivers from AZ. Why would he have been on waivers in the first place if he had options remaining? It must be that the Dbacks weren't even interested in having him use up a 40 man roster spot, so they had to waive him and have him clear waivers before they could remove him from the 40 man, even with his minor league options remaining. So the Reds have access to those options as long as they keep him on the 40 man roster?

If that's true, then Germano has the advantage over Gosling, since the Reds already have 3 lefties in the rotation.

I would say Williams is hanging on by a thread, but really, who do the Reds even have as an alternative?? A trade of one of the OFs for a starter is absolutely necessary before Opening Day.

Gosling hit hard in loss to Pirates
Left-hander gives up nine runs in first inning

Pirates at the plate: The Pirates sent 16 hitters to the plate in the first inning and scored 10 runs to put the game out of reach. In the first inning alone, Jose Bautista, Craig Wilson and Jose Castillo each doubled and drove in two runs, Nate McLouth and Jack Wilson scored twice and Jose Hernandez had two singles and two RBIs. Humberto Cota had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a bases-clearing double in the fourth.

Reds at the plate: Third baseman Rich Aurilia went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run, his first of the spring. Brian Buchanan had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs. Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns combined to go 0-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts.

Pirates on the mound: Pirates starter Paul Maholm limited the Reds to one run on two hits and a walk in the longest outing by a Pirates pitcher thus far this spring. Right-hander Giovanni Carrara, who had been competing in the World Baseball Classic with Venezuela, allowed one run on two hits in one inning in his first Grapefruit League appearance of the spring.

Reds on the mound: Southpaw Michael Gosling, who is competing for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, did not make it out of the first inning. Gosling hit the first batter he faced and then proceeded to allow nine runs (eight earned) on two singles, five doubles and a walk. Gosling retired just one of the 10 batters he faced. Former first-round pick Homer Bailey allowed one unearned run and fanned five in 2 2/3 innings.

Grapefruit League records: Pirates 11-7; Reds 10-8.

Up next: Left-hander Oliver Perez, fresh from his three shutout innings against Team USA last week in the World Baseball Classic, will make his Grapefruit League debut when the Pirates host the Toronto Blue Jays at McKechnie Field on Sunday.

Cincinnati right-hander Aaron Harang will look to improve a 3-0 record on Sunday when the Reds host the Philadelphia Phillies at Ed Smith Stadium.
