    Reds release Ty Howington

In all the trade talk, this slipped thru

    http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs...inor-moves.asp

    Minor moves

SARASOTA -- As I slog through all my trade-related copy today, two player moves from the minor-league side of camp that might interest you:

The Reds have released left-hander Ty Howington, the team's No. 1 draft pick in 1999, and Springfield's own Jimmy Journell, who was reassigned to minor league camp in cuts a week ago.

Wow that was 7 years ago?!?

You just have to wonder what would of been if Ty was drafted by the Braves.

I was in Sarasota last weekend, and Saturday I saw Ty throwing in one of the bullpens for a short period of time. I guess he will never be the same as far as velocity though.

That sound you here is Tim Kremchek crying by the hole that was going to be his new jacuzzi.

The other sound you hear is Tim Kremchek laughing when he remembers that he has 15 other jacuzzis.

That's a real shame. He had big league "stuff" before the first elbow surgery. He had a Barry Zito, Ben McDonald type hook that really set him apart.
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...

If Howington has anything left at all, I have a feeling that somebody...perhaps a team like the Royals or Devil Rays, will give him a look.

Journell kind of surprises me. I thought the Reds liked what they saw from him, and a lot of people here were excited about that acquisition when it occurred. Seems he could have been kept at AAA for the time being, but when you lack pitching, you really shouldn't be dispensing serviceable arms like the Reds have been doing lately.
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

While I agree w/ the part about dispensing pitching, perhaps the Reds are just setting things up for the last round of spring training cuts. Certainly there will be a half-decent, a year or 2 away from being washed up or just too expensive pitcher to get cut within the next 2 weeks. Maybe WK is just clearing out the junk in the closet, so that he can add some fresh junk that has a slightly better (although still small) chance to actually help the reds this year, and would be willing to start the year out in Louisville.

Think of a guy like Al Leiter, although I doubt he's cut by the Yankees, certainly there are other guys like them that are past their prime and looking to hang on for one more shot at glory. Certainly the reds staff would encourage someone like that to hang on, stashed away in Louisville w/ a contract that says if their not called up to the big leagues by such & such a date, then they have the option to become a free agent.

    Al Leiter retired on Sunday.

Keep an eye out for Howington's name. My prediction is: He will be turned into a lefty specialists and wind up being a decent bullpen option for a team like the Cardinals or Braves in ayear or two. ala Hammond and Nitkowski.

Wouldn't be too surprised to see him sign a minor league deal with the Nationals. You know JimBo has an itch to sign him..

It's ashame that his career was destroyed by so many arm injuries. But from talking and playing ball with former minor league players this is a common theme. Not as many players return from major arm surgeries as the media likes to portray. You hear about all the major league players returning and being decent or equal to their level before but you hardly ever hear about the minor leaguers that have to end their career b/c of surgeries. Ty made it back from several operations which is more than most players. With a little luck he will catch on with somebody and rebuild his career.
