Very encouraging to see those 9 strikeouts in five innings.
Greetings from Sarasota! The temperature heated up on Monday and unfortunately for the Dragons so did the bats of the Beloit Snappers (Minnesota Twins). The Snappers made the 80 trip from Fort Myers worthwhile, with a pair of three run innings on route to beating the Dragons 10-1. Beloit pounded out 14 hits on the afternoon and Snappers pitching held the Dragons to just six.
Left hander Travis Wood, the Reds second round selection in the 2005 draft was as good as advertised in the 5.0 innings he tossed. The southpaw allowed a solo home run in the third inning as one of just three hits he allowed on the day. Wood had Beloit hitters off kilter all afternoon long, striking out nine opposition hitters.
Offensively, Ben Mummy picked up a double and scored the lone run for Dayton, coming home on a wild pitch in the seventh inning. Javier Rumbos added a double for the Dragons and Mike Griffin picked up a base hit, who struggled offensively.
The Dragons are back in action on Tuesday afternoon against the Delmarva Shorebirds, the class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. More from Sarasota all week long as spring training wraps up. Opening Day is just 10 days away!
Wish you were here!
