    Bottom of the 2nd:

Eduardo Perez lines a single past a diving EE.

Belliard pops out to Valentine in foul territory, 1 out.

Aaron Boone K's on a breaking pitch, 2 outs.

Blake lines or flies out to RF, 3 outs. 4-2 Reds still.

    Top of the 3rd:

Dunn leads off (doesn't that sound familiar?). Announcers mention that the Reds "have some power." Dunn Ks, 1 out.

Valentine grounds out to SS, 2 outs.

Buchanan grounds to SS again, 3 outs. 4-2 Reds.

mike hegan and rick manning. listening to these two is just part of the many "pleasures" of living in NE Ohio. The third member of the Indians broadcast team , John Sanders, is even worse.

    That would be Gannon.

Bannon, 27, was drafted by the Reds in the 18th round of the 2001 draft out of the UC Santa Barbara. He signed as a college senior, so he was 23 and playing at Billings that year. He didn't hit much in the Pioneer League in '01 or High-A in 2002, and repeated High-A at Potomac in 2003. A .295/.360/.443 line got him the bump to Chattanooga, where he hit .252/.316/.408 in 2004 and .252/.317/.449 (making the Southern League All-Star Team) in 2005. He was promoted to Louisville in July, hitting .282/.296/.443 in 41 games.

Jeff has pretty good power for an infielder, but a poor BB/K ratio. All this basestealing he's done in spring training is unusual, given that his career high in steals is 14. It certainly wouldn't be unheard of for him to take a big leap forward and make the major leagues, but he's not and has never really been a serious prospect.

Re: Game Thread 3/31 at Indians

Per Steve, Reds claimed LHP Jonathan Coutlangus off waivers from San Francisco and optioned him to AA Chattanooga. To clear a spot on the 40-man, Grant Balfour was DLed.

Coutlangus is a converted outfielder drafted in the 19th round in 2003 out of the University of South Carolina. He hit well in his first pro season, but cratered in 2004 with a .194/.293/.242 line in 2004 at High-A Salem-Keizer. The Giants converted him to pitcher, and he rewarded them at High-A San Jose in 2005 with a 3.04 ERA and 4-0 record in 50 appearances, posting a nice 29/79 BB/K ratio in 77 innings and allowing just 64 hits.

He's 25 for 2006 and will be getting his first taste of AA. I wonder if Johnny Almaraz saw the success of Brian Shackleford and tried to go back to the well. Shack was 26, not 24, when he was converted at the AA level, and reached the big leagues in his third year of pitching. Coutlangus had better immediate success than Shack did, too, as Brian walked a ton of people when he was first changed over.

I think he may have just made Princeton's favorite player list for being a converted position player to pitcher
