We should claim as many arms under 25 as possible, ya never know.

This would be a fantastic opportunity to try and move some one of the "Dan O'Brien Specials" from the minor leagues: Germano, Chick or Lizard.

I don't forsee Germano or Elizardo becoming anything of use to the major league ballclub due to both lacking strong velocity and an "out" pitch to use at the next level. Chick is a little bit more projectible, but as a bullpen arm only, and that's only if he gets his act together this year at Chattanooga.

Perkins intrigues me more of the two, due to the good writeup on his sinking fastball. Despite being a sinkerball pitcher, he still Ks at an OK rate (7.59 in AA last year), and has fewer hits than IP -- which is probably a good sign that he induces bad contact, given the defensive deficencies that are more prevalent in the low-minors (either that, or he's incredibly BABIP lucky). However, his walk totals are slightly alarming: 51 free passes in 131 IPs last year. It was his first year at AA, though.

I'd say it's a good risk for the Reds to take at the right price. Throw him down at Chatty and see what happens -- when your farm system is as barren as the Reds is from AA up, this is the kind of player you need to be targeting.

If the REDS did trade for him prior to him going on the waiver wire I don't think they could stick at Louisville so wouldn't that mean picking which pitcher goes?

I believe that on top of the waiver wire order teams in the same league also get preference.

Did the Reds not get 1.5 mill in the Pena deal? That to me makes this perfect Gamble money for the dbl aa and triple aaa aquisitions, grab and poach away Mr. Krivsky. If you find 3 out of 10 serviceable ML players you are doing very well

That money was to make up the difference between what Arroyo and Pena's salary so we didn't spend anymore than we have budgeted for the year at this point! But does a guy like Sardinha make some sense to deal here for Perkins, I think so given Dane's situation coupled with the fact that Toronto is likely to be missing Zaun for a time w/ an injury I believe. Dane could give them some depth at the position for a short time.

Instead we sign Darrell May, a guy who's got a dog-eared poster of Eric Milton in Twins finery on his bedroom wall.

Would I trade something for either Perkins or Carvajal? Sure. I've got this catcher who's the BEST DEFENSIVE CATCHER EVER...

Bringing this thread back because we were talking about Vince Perkins and Marcos Carvajal in it. I've heard nothing new on Perkins, but it looks like Tampa Bay worked a trade with Seattle to get Carvajal, and released Jesus Colome to make room for him - who himself would be another intriguing arm to look at for Cincy if he's healthy.

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners acquired Class A pitcher Jose De La Cruz from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Thursday for Marcos Carvajal in a swap of right-handers.

The 22-year-old De La Cruz was 3-6 with a 3.94 ERA and 19 saves in 50 games for Class-A Southwest Michigan in 2005. The Devil Rays signed him in 2002.

Seattle had designated 21-year-old Carvajal for assignment last week. He allowed eight runs in 2 1-3 innings during spring training. The Mariners acquired him from Colorado for catcher Yorvit Torrealba in December.

Any updates on Perkins? I hope Krivsky doesn't let a good young live arm like Perkins clear waivers. Sign this guy, assign him to Louisville and let Soto teach him that changeup.

So, Milwaukee wound up getting Perkins. Another great move by Doug Melvin.

Doug Melvin is a great GM. He'll have that team competing for playoff spots every year for the next 5-10 years.

Meanwhile, Krivsky sits on his butt while a great looking arms passes through waivers.
