The Reds have had worse opening days

I realize that Reds fans are depressed about yesterday's opening day loss, but, hey, they have had worse opening day defeats. So they gave up 16 runs-in '77 they surrendered 24.
That was 1877, when the Reds began the season by losing 24-6. I haven't been able to determine whether or not President Rutherford B. Hayes threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The 1877 Reds went on to a 15-42 record, finishing last. The Reds were disbanded in mid-season, with the club declaring bankruptcy, and didn't play for three weeks, before new ownership rescued the team.
During the 1877 season Candy Cummings pitched for the Reds. He is sometimes credited with inventing the curveball. Greg Rhodes and John Snyder have speculated that Cummings invented the hanging curveball in 1877, since he went 5-14 for the Reds.
Now, does everyone feel better? Things were worse a mere 129 years ago.

    Now that's what I call long-term perspective.

The only problem is the Reds in 77 were coming off back to back World Championships.

Yesterday the Reds were coming off 5 straight loosing seasons and a non playoff appearance since 95 unless you include the one game to get into the playoffs in 99.

Cummings is the first HOF in MLB Reds History. So much was expected from him and so much wasn't deivered that the fans and Enquirer were up his rear all season and when he didn't produce like promised he quit the team early.

Cummings liked the ML, there the players owned a stake in the team more than they did in MLB.

RB was talking about 1877 not 1977...

Sorry. I was thinking as I was typing that I do not remember 1977 being that bad of a start.

One of the things I love about baseball is that it doesn't matter if you lose
    3-2 or 125-1, it's just a loss.

125-1. Was that a game Eric Milton started and Danny Graves then came on in relief?

Remember that game? Hot, humid night in August at GABP.

I realize that if a team constantly loses by that much then it's a big deal, but Harang isn't going to give up 6 or 7 runs every time out. It's just a loss. They could win 3-2 tomorrow just as easily.
