    Clement vs. Arroyo

This popped up during the WMP trade, and some wondered which 2005 Clement would pitch this year, along with salary, making Arroyo the safer bet.

FWIW, at least in his first game, it seems like Clement early 2005 has returned.

He is 2-hitting the O's through 5, and has only thrown 57 pitches, 1BB, 6K.

O's pitching is horrendous, so I understand the 11 runs allowed, but to 3-hit even the O's through 6, pretty amazing.

Clement's got great stuff, but he just gets rattled easily. Overall, he is probably a better pitcher than Arroyo, or at least has better stuff, but Arroyo has much more poise and gets the job done. Clement is better off as the number four guy in Boston, sort of out of the lime light, and in that role I think he will prosper.

    Re: Clement vs. Arroyo

From a Red Sox fan perspective, I wish they'd traded Clement and kept Arroyo. But in terms of actual results in how many games you'd win with each guy? I think it's remarkably similar. They're both inconsistent, just in totally different ways. Clement drives me nuts, and I love watching Arroyo, but they will each probably give you a quality start most of the time, and total stinkers just often enough to keep either from being as good as they seem when they're at their best.

Arroyo is cheaper and younger, period.
