Oklahoma set to name new basketball coach...

It will apparently be Jeff Capel, the former player at Duke who had spent the past four years coaching at Virginia Commonwealth. This is, at best, an intriguing move because Capel wasn't even mentioned on the list of possible candidates to replace Kelvin Sampson. Wonder if Capel will break the curse of former Coach K proteges who don't find the same amount of success once they leave Duke (Quin Snyder, Tommy Amaker, etc...).

Wow, talk about out of left field.

I guess Oklahoma's recruiting violations are worse than expected if they couldnt land a big name coach. I figured it would have been Mark Turgeon of Wichita St.

Capel made a big splash when he took VCU to the NCAAs in 2004 but in my opinion, the jury's really still out on him. The '04 team was the previous coach's players. Last year, the team was pretty solid, losing to a very good Old Dominion team in the CAA tournament final in overtime. But this year, VCU slipped to a 6th place finish in the Colonial. His ability to recruit has been recently called into question as a result.

He's a bright, likeable guy and may turn out to be a very good coach down the road but I'm surprised Oklahoma didn't choose a more established guy.

Maybe Capel got some residual CAA-love from George Mason's run this year.

The fact that football will always be #1 at OU doesn't help their case for a big name guy either.

Turgeon was my guess too, and as it turns out, he signed an extension at Wichita State to stay through 2016! I wonder how long he actually does stay there.

I wonder if OU chose Capel because he has a Duke pedigree. By that I mean that since Duke runs a squeaky clean program, it is assumed that any coach that comes out of that program - unless his name is Quin - is clean and will run a clean program. Thus making the NCAA go easier on them if and when they lower the boom on them for recruiting violations. Not that Turgeon doesn't run a clean or a good program but having a coach from Duke may trump having a coach from Kansas.

And women's basketball has quickly surpassed the men as the most popular hoop squad at OU. Expect the OU women to be a top five team and Final Four contender next year and the year after, while the men's team will be faced with uncertainty.
