Syracuse rallies, sends Bats to 0-4
Special to The Courier-Journal

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Chad Mottola's single scored Luis Figueroa with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Syracuse SkyChiefs rallied to beat Louisville 5-4 last night, dropping the Bats to 0-4 this season.

The Bats led 4-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but the SkyChiefs tallied three runs and six hits off Scott Chiasson (0-1) over the final two innings to win it.

Rob Cosby's single scored John-Ford Griffin to bring Syracuse within 4-3 in the eighth.

Chiasson retired the first batter in the ninth but surrendered a home run to pinch-hitter Kevin Barker that tied it a 4. Consecutive singles to center field by Figueroa, Ryan Roberts and Mottola produced the winning run.

Figueroa finished 4 for 5. Former Anaheim Angels and Cincinnati Reds reliever Ben Weber (1-0) got the victory, striking out the only batter he faced.

Jacob Cruz's two-run homer in the seventh gave the Bats a 3-1 lead. After Syracuse committed its fourth error of the game, Rob Stratton doubled home Chris Denorfia to make it 4-2 in the eighth.

Louisville starter Chris Michalak allowed one unearned run and three hits over six innings, striking out five and walking two. The Bats finished with just five hits.

The four-game series will continue tonight at 6.
