    Syracuse rallies, sends Bats to 0-4
    Special to The Courier-Journal

    SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Chad Mottola's single scored Luis Figueroa with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Syracuse SkyChiefs rallied to beat Louisville 5-4 last night, dropping the Bats to 0-4 this season.

    The Bats led 4-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, but the SkyChiefs tallied three runs and six hits off Scott Chiasson (0-1) over the final two innings to win it.

    Rob Cosby's single scored John-Ford Griffin to bring Syracuse within 4-3 in the eighth.

    Chiasson retired the first batter in the ninth but surrendered a home run to pinch-hitter Kevin Barker that tied it a 4. Consecutive singles to center field by Figueroa, Ryan Roberts and Mottola produced the winning run.

    Figueroa finished 4 for 5. Former Anaheim Angels and Cincinnati Reds reliever Ben Weber (1-0) got the victory, striking out the only batter he faced.

    Jacob Cruz's two-run homer in the seventh gave the Bats a 3-1 lead. After Syracuse committed its fourth error of the game, Rob Stratton doubled home Chris Denorfia to make it 4-2 in the eighth.

    Louisville starter Chris Michalak allowed one unearned run and three hits over six innings, striking out five and walking two. The Bats finished with just five hits.

    The four-game series will continue tonight at 6.

    Chattanooga got a solid performance from another starting pitcher Monday. Eddy Perez who, like Steve Kelly Sunday, limited the Suns to just one hit. The Lookouts held a 1-0 lead until Jacksonville tied the game in the eighth, then won it, 2-1, in the ninth when Calvin Medlock walked in the winning run.

    Four Jacksonville pitchers limited the Lookouts to only three hits, Meanwhile, Valdez, Mike Nannini, Jon Coutlangus, and Medlock gave up just two hits in a losing cause.

    The Lookouts stranded six runners, and the Suns left seven men on base.

    The Lookouts got their lone run in the second inning. Aaron Herr led off with a walk followed by Javier Colina's double to left sending Herr to third. Catcher Miguel Perez grounded out to short as Herr scored. After Anderson Machado walked, Eric Crozier grounded into a force out as Colina scampered to third. With runners at the corners, pitcher Eddy Valdez grounded into a force out to strand the runners.

    Chattanooga held on to their 1-0 lead until the eighth inning when Jacksonville tied the game, 1-1, on a sacrifice fly off Lookouts' pitcher Calvin Medlock. Medlock (1-1) walked four hitters in the game.

    After the Lookouts went down in order in the ninth inning, the Suns won the game in their last at bat when Medlock walked in the winning run.
    - Matt Kemp grounded out leading off;
    - Andy LaRoche followed with a walk;
    - A. J. Zapp singled to right field, as LaRoche moved to third;
    - Justin Ruggiano reached on a fielder's choice out;
    - Anthony Raglani walked to load the bases;
    - A.J Ellis walked plating LaRoche with the winning run.

    Although losing the final game of the their first five-game series, the Lookouts won the series, 3-2.

    There could be a roster change very soon. Chris Denorfia was optioned to Triple-A Louisville Monday which may result in Norris Hopper's return to Chattanooga. The Lookouts would have to clear a spot on their roster.

    Chattanooga opens at home Tuesday night at 6:15 p.m. A fireworks show follows the game between the Lookouts and the Carolina Mudcats.

    Sarasota Reds defeat Threshers for first win

    BY PHIL DENIS CORRESPONDENT

    SARASOTA -- Sarasota trailed early, but rallied in the later innings Monday night at Ed Smith Stadium and the Reds earned their first Florida State League victory of the season with a 4-2 triumph over the Clearwater Threshers.

    With the game tied at 2-2, Mark Schramek drove in the game-winning run with a single to right field with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. It drove in Jay Garthwaite.

    The Reds (1-4) scored an insurance run against the Philadelphia Phillies' affiliate (3-2) in the eighth after Adam Rosales smacked a one-out double to left and scored when Garthwaite singled to left field.

    Another highlight for Sarasota was the injury-free performance by major leaguer Quinton McCracken. He played seven innings, going 0-for-4 and catching three fly balls in right field in seven innings.

    McCracken, signed by Cincinnati as a free agent on Feb. 14, suffered a right ankle sprain during spring training.

    McCracken is expected to continue his rehabilitation with Sarasota throughout the week.

    Right-handed pitcher Jim Paduch (1-0) was credited with the victory after working the first six innings and giving up only one earned run. Sarasota High grad Jeremy Schmidt earned his first hold of the season following his pitching 12/3 scoreless and hitless innings before Abe Woody picked up the team's first save.

    Clearwater's Andy Baldwin took the loss in front of 288 spectators.

    Notes

    Sarasota will continue it homestand tonight and Wednesday against Clearwater before the Lakeland Tigers come in for games Thursday and Friday. All games begin at 7. Homer Bailey, 19, the Reds' No. 1 draft choice of 2004, will start on the mound tonight for Sarasota. The right-handed Bailey (0-1, 3.86 ERA) allowed five hits and two earned runs in 42/3 innings during Thursday's Opening Night loss here to the Minnesota Twins' Fort Myers Miracle. ... Entering Monday, Sarasota was seventh in FSL team hitting with a .234 average. Its pitching was rated 11th with an earned run average of 5.29. ... Tim Brunswick, the director of baseball operations for St. Petersburg-based Minor League Baseball, attended Monday's game as a guest of Sarasota

    Pretty ridiculous title if you ask me. By the way - Travis Wood is pitching for Dayton tonight.

    Can hot-hitting Griffin be the Reds' version of Pujols?
    By Marc Katz

    Staff Writer

    DAYTON — The major leagues are filled with players taken late in the draft or not drafted at all.

    You never really know how good a player is going to be until he plays, the poster boy being Albert Pujols, a 13th-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 1999 who signed late, played only one season of minor league ball — mostly at Peoria in the Class A Midwest League — and is a star, so they tell me.

    Peoria's classmate in the Midwest League, Dayton, may not have anyone on the roster as prodigious as Pujols, but have you seen the start by second baseman Michael Griffin?

    "No, I wasn't drafted out of high school," said Griffin, who was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and lives in Cedar Hill, Texas

    So he went to college instead, Baylor, a rather good baseball school.

    "No, I wasn't drafted after my junior year (the first year four-year college students are eligible)," Griffin said.

    Finally, following his senior season, Griffin was drafted — in the 14th round by the Reds.

    "I wasn't happy (not being drafted)," Griffin said. "You're down a day or a week, and then you go on. I took the summer off after my junior season and worked out."

    Those workouts must have worked. Baylor went to the College World Series last year and Griffin was drafted.

    You may have noticed him on opening night Thursday when, batting leadoff, he hit two triples and a double.

    How about the next night when he hit another triple? Or the third night when he was held to a single? Or Sunday when an outfielder didn't go hard enough for a ball Griffin hit and he easily turned it into a double?

    "He may have an average time down to first base," Dragons manager Billy Gardner Jr. said, "but he's good when he gets under way. I like everything about him."

    Grant Griesser, Reds' assistant director of development, says Griffin was scouted at Baylor, but the knock was, if he couldn't find a position there — he was used at second, third, the outfield, etc. — then maybe he wasn't a top prospect.

    Still, the Reds recognized Griffin was some kind of prospect, drafted and signed him and sent him to Billings, Mont., for rookie ball.

    Thirteen games in — with a .263 batting average — Griffin's arm hurt so bad he had to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn elbow ligament, ending his season.

    The Reds didn't know how healthy Griffin would be in spring training, but less than eight months after his surgery, he declared himself ready to go, and he made the Dragons' roster.

    OK, it's way, way, way too early to predict what is going to happen to Michael Griffin — or any of the other Dragons, for that matter, but what a nice start for a mid-level draftee.

    Sometimes, you just never know.

    Dragons look awful in loss
    Dayton errors, wild pitches, inept offense all contribute to Lansing cruising to 10-1 win.
    By Marc Katz

    Staff Writer

    DAYTON — Even while losing three of their first four games to open the Class A Midwest League season, the Dayton Dragons looked good.

    Monday night they did not, and the Lansing Lugnuts took advantage.

    A homer in each of the first two innings, two hit batters, two wild pitches and two errors helped the Lugnuts beat the Dragons 10-1 at Fifth Third Field.

    They were the first homers for the Lugnuts this season.

    It also didn't help that a replacement ump for a replacement ump (names withheld by minor league baseball edict) appeared to have a wide strike zone.

    At least Dayton first baseman Bobby Mosby broke out of a mini-slump, driving in a run with a single in the third after doubling in the second.

    "I comprehended my swing," Mosby said of off-season work. "I made some changes, and I know what I can do."

    Mosby was also the victim of one of seven called third strikes among 14 Dragons strikeouts.

    "It was a combination of their pitching and we definitely let the umpire get in our hair tonight," Dayton manager Billy Gardner Jr. said. "But that umpire worked both sides."

    Lansing batters struck out 10 times, only once on a called third.

    The other bad/good news was starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, who allowed five runs in four innings, but walked none and struck out five.

    "He showed a very live fastball," Gardner said.

    "At times, it was overpowering. And he got out of the fourth inning clean (two strikeouts, no baserunners) to end on a positive note."

    Dayton's best chances for making the game competitive came in the second and third. They loaded the bases in each inning, but with two outs, and scored only one run. In fact, the Dragons have scored only one run in their last 21 innings over three games.

    Lansing, a Toronto affiliate, came in tied for the league lead with a 3-1 record.

    At least MCracken is on the mend and can fill our void of a slap-hitting utility-type.

    If only we hadn't let Castro go, we might not find ourself caught in this predicament.

    I'm going to the Dragon's game tonight.

    Travis Wood is scheduled to pitch tonight. Anxious to see him throw, although it looks like he got beat up pretty good his first outing.

    After watching the Dragons hit the other night they should go back to taking one strike. They all seem to have a uppercup swing.

    Re: Reds minor league notes(Tuesday, April 11)

    Sounds like Wood had a very good start tonight as Dayton won 2-1. Wood had 10 strikeouts in 5 innings.

    http://www.daytondragons.com/pressbo...?article_id=20

    Dayton, OH – What a difference a day makes. The Dayton Dragons (2-4) got steam rolled 10-1 by the Lansing Lugnuts (4-2) in the opening game of the three game series on Monday night. Tuesday night, the Dragons got all the pitching they would need and just enough hitting to sneak by the Lugnuts 2-1 in a thriller at Fifth Third Field.

    7,715 packed the stands to see the second start of the season of Dayton lefty Travis Wood (WP, 1-0) and the crowd was not disappointed. The Reds second round selection in the 2005 First Year Player Draft was as good as advertised, tossing 5.0 innings of 10 strikeout shutout baseball against Lansing . Amazingly Wood, who scattered four hits on the night, did not have a single one, two, three inning. Three different times against Wood, Lansing had runners in scoring position with less than two outs but did not score.

    Chi-Hung Cheng (LP 1-1) matched Wood almost pitch for pitch in the first four innings of the game. The fifth would be the undoing of the Lugnuts lefthander who started the inning surrendering a solo homer to Eric Eymann (1), giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead. Dayton followed the Eymann home run with three consecutive singles. Gerardo Cabrera and Mike Griffin both picked up singles to left and the Dragons had first and second with none down. Paul Janish, picked up the fourth straight hit of the inning, another single to left that scored Cabrera and gave Dayton a 2-0 lead.

    Russell Haltiwanger (ND) took over for Wood in the sixth and after giving up a lead off hit to Joey Metropoulos picked up a double play grounder to end the Lansing threat. Haltiwanger was perfect in the seventh and picked up the first two outs in the eighth before allowing a solo homer to dead center off the bat of Jacob Butler that cut the lead to 2-1.

    Zac Stott (SV, 2) entered with two down and got Metropoulos to line out ending the eighth and struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his second save. On the night, Dayton pitching struck out 16, tying a franchise record, achieved six previous times.

    Dayton and Lansing wraps up the three game series Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. The game can also be heard live on the internet at www.daytondragons.com RHP Carlos Fisher gets the start for the Dragons, while Lansing will counter with LHP Kristian Bell.
