My guess is Tony LaRussa wants a maximum of one rookie in his rotation.

I agree. Larussa usually believes even one rookie in the starting rotation is one too many. But it's likely that in 2007 he may not have any choice.
I imagine the Birds will retain one or two guys and then sign or trade for one or two guys. Most likely you'll see Carpenter with three other vets and Anthony Reyes.
