Help! I am having computer problems

The other night I was having problems with my virtual memory on my home computer. I was told to increase the RAM and I did so. Yesterday I tried to start it up again and as I was logging on to Windows XP, I got a message that I was out of virtual memory. I have also been getting an Explorer.exe Appliction error. The message says the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142) Click on OK to Terminate the application. Sometimes it will not take me to my desktop and sometimes it will. But the only thing I get on my desktop is by wallpaper. No applications, no window bar. My screensaver works and I can Control Alt Delete into Task Manager but I have no idea what to do from there. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Chip, right click on My Computer, click Properties, click Advanced, click Settings under Performance and then click Advanced, what's it say under Virtual memory?

I cannot do that. Nothing shows up on my desktop except my wallpaper. No icons, no menu bars, nothing.

Start the machine again. when it's rebooting hit F8 and open in SAFE Mode.

OK, I booted in safe mode and did what you said. Under virtual memory it says total paging size for all drivers is 0 MB. I click on change and it says 1667 MB available on Drice C. I have no paging file selected. Total paging file size for all drivers is minimum allowed is 2 MB, Recommended is 94MB and 0 MB is currently allocated.
