Very pleasantly surprised to see Dwight Yoakam listed a few times. Totally one of my all-time favorites, yet never seemed regarded highly in country circles. Hard to narrow down to one, but a handful that have always stood out for me are Haggard, Jones, Cash (Johnny specifically, but Tommy Cash was good too) Marty Robbins and Buck Owens among classics. Dwight and Rodney Crowell from the next era of country. And the most recent era, Brad Paisley's the best hands down as far as ones in the mainstream, though I like the sounds of several "alt" artists. Then there's bluegrass, but that's a whole other deal.

True, I've also found that I like Keith Whitleys voice a lot and his songs had a nice older style.

Other guys I like not mentioned would be Billy Joe Shaver, Tom T Hall and Guy Clark... oh and the Flatlanders crew is special.

Oh and Steve Earle.... I love me some Steve Earle, old, new, all of it.

I also really like about half of what Robbie Fulks does. Country Love Songs and Georgia Hard are fantastic albums.

IIRC, Fulks is a damn fine guitar player too.

He is a very fine guitar player and incredibly funny at times.

More good ones. Shaver is another one I would lump with Yoakam and Crowell, highly underappreciated and forgotten by many. He actually has some new material he just released. Agreed on Whitley as well, real good old-style, pure sound. Tom T is probably one of the best songwriters ever in Nashville, but he can sing too. Fox On The Run, Country Cabin-itis, That's How I Got To Memphis, some others are incredible songs.

And count me in favor of Steve Earle, too. Sadly seems to be blacklisted by Nashville, and I recall a quote saying something along the lines he's better off in New York than Nashville these days anyway. Has a nice radio gig.

I don't listen to a lot of country. Not one of my favorites. I did go through an Alabama stage in high school (80's). As for current...TB has turned me on to Toby Keith. I must say I enjoy his music. It's fun stuff!

Very cool. I recall that album... "King Of Fools" "Velvet Chains" I believe both are on there, and awesome tunes.

George Strait is unquestionably my personal #1. No-frills country music. Good stuff all around. Was fortunate enough to see Strait, Allan Jackson and Jimmy Buffet in concert in Dallas two years ago. Best show ever.

Brad Paisley is another favorite, as well as Alan Jackson and Clint Black. Garth Brooks I like for the most part, but some of his stuff I don't care for at all.

As for the older generation, Cash and George Jones are always good.

Dierks Bentley is my favorite out of the younger group. Gary Allan has a good sound as well.

Can't stand the whole Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Billy Currington, etc. crap currently being played relentlessly. Just not country.

    Johnny Cash.
Burn down the disco. Hang the blessed DJ. Because the music that he constantly plays, it says nothing to me about my life.
