Asleep At the Wheel are very good. Ray Benson's voice is mesmerizing.

You are right that they are not country, but they are incredible. One of the best bands to see live. Another not truly country, but great and close enough type of band is My Morning Jacket.Drive by Truckers (although they aren't that country)

Okemah and the Melody of Riot is a suprisingly good record after some lackluster solo efforts by Farrar.seeing them with Son Volt next month.

Listening to Jay solo really makes me miss Uncle Tupelo. I have to run for the closest Wilco record to feel better about life.saw jay solo last year. BORING.
By far, my favorite group is Rascal Flatts. Those guys can really sing! They will be around for a long time.
anymore, even jay's tupelo songs don't do much for me. I seem to like the Tweedy songs better these days.Originally Posted by nycredsfan

Tompall and the Glaser Brothers
The Osborne Brothers
Let's go old school. How 'bout the Statler Brothers.
I would have to say Dixie Chicks. Not too many country bands out there. And I'm not really impressed with what's called country music now anyways.
Oak Ridge Boys
Lonestar
Diamond Rio
SheDaisy
Alabama.

While definitely not a country group, I'm going to have to agree with the praise of the Drive-By Truckers. I saw them live at the Austin City Limits Music Fest a couple years ago, and they were incredible. These guys are, far and away, my favorite band right now. Another band that's not quite country...closer to bluegrass instrumentally if forced to label their sound...but definitely worth checking out is Bonepony. Their albums are a little difficult to find (although i-tunes has 3 of them), but well worth a listen.
Looks like I stand corrected on the Dixie Chicks, they have a new album coming out. Their new song, "Not Ready to Make Nice" is about everything that has happened.
Another group that had a song I liked was the Notorious Cherry Bombs(Vince Gill's new group). The song is "Its Hard to Kiss The Lips At Night".
