There are rumors out there that AI wants a guy vs guy final so the criticism against Katherine was planned and Simon felt bad about it so he apologized. Her high vote count showed AI that the judges dont necessarily reflect the publics perception.

How many votes did Katherine get for the dress alone? Yowza!
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

I don't think many people remembered her dress. Heck, I couldn't even tell you what color it was.

I thought maybe the judges were trying to "save face." I thought maybe they knew the results and decided that since Katharine did so well, that they should speak up and tell the viewers that "they were wrong."
For every action there is an equal and opposite criticism.

That's my take as well. It was bush league, IMO. They were unanimous in their criticism. They might have been a little too harsh, but I think they were clear in that it wasn't a good performance. I happened to agree with them. I thought it was her weakest performance and was WAY too much song for her.
