Brandon Phillips named NL Player of the Week

Brandon Phillips of the Cincinnati Reds named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, who led the league with 17 RBI, has been named Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week for April 17-23, 2006. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the National League and American League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect Bank of America's long-standing tradition of promoting and recognizing higher standards of accomplishment.

Phillips, acquired by the Reds from the Cleveland Indians in an April 7th trade, hit .452 (14-31) with six runs, three home runs, four doubles and 27 total bases last week. Over seven games, he put together a slugging percentage of .871 and a .452 on-base percentage. Brandon compiled a career-high seven-game hitting streak, including a three-hit, four-RBI performance vs. Florida on April 17th. He also had a three-hit, six-RBI showing that included two home runs (one grand slam) at Milwaukee on April 20th. The 17 RBI by Phillips are the most by an N.L. Player of the Week since Sammy Sosa had 19 RBI the week of August 4-10, 2002.

Other nominees this past week included a pair of Phillips' Cincinnati teammates, Edwin Encarnacion (.304, 2 HR, 11 RBI) and Scott Hatteberg (.500, 4 2B, 1 RBI); Craig Biggio (.615, 3 HR, 7 RBI), Morgan Ensberg (.409, 6 HR, 11 RBI) and Roy Oswalt (2-0, 3.29 ERA, 10 SO) of the Astros; Washington's Ryan Church (.350, 2 HR, 5 RBI), Nick Johnson (.435, 2 HR, 3 RBI) and Alfonso Soriano (.400, 3 HR, 5 RBI); Greg Maddux (2-0, 0.60 ERA, 10 SO) and Ronny Cedeņo (.429, 1 2B, 3 RBI) of the Chicago Cubs; Milwaukee's Dave Bush (1-0, 1.80 ERA, 14 SO), Carlos Lee (.360, 3 HR, 6 RBI) and Damian Miller (.588, 1 HR, 7 RBI); Kyle Davies (1-0, 1.00 ERA, 1 CG, 6 SO), Tim Hudson (1-0, 1.00 ERA, 1 CG, 6 SO), and Andruw Jones (.263, 4 HR, 7 RBI) of the Braves; Arizona's Jeff DaVanon (.435, 1 HR, 5 RBI), Luis Gonzalez (.308, 2 HR, 11 RBI) and Chad Tracy (.448, 1 HR, 5 RBI); Chris Carpenter (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 SO) and Albert Pujols (.316, 3 HR, 9 RBI) of the Cardinals; Carlos Delgado (.346, 4 HR, 6 RBI) and Pedro Martinez (2-0, 2.63 ERA, 19 SO) of the New York Mets; Omar Vizquel (.435, 1 HR, 6 R) of the Giants; Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (.412, 3 HR, 6 RBI); Josh Barfield (.394, 2 HR, 3 SB) of the Padres; and Colorado's David Cortes (3-0, 0.00 ERA, 3 SO).

In recognition of this honor, Tourneau, the world's largest watch store, is proud to award the Bank of America Presents the National League Player of the Week Brandon Phillips with a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece.

They may say there were other candidates....they just say that so they don't hurt anyone's feelings.

    There were no other candidates.

Tremendous job by Phillips. Now he gets another chance to "deal with success" -- something he says he didn't do well in Cleveland.

    Keep grinding, BP.

They should've given Phillips the "Thank you for allowing us to cut Tony Womack" award.
Games are won on run differential -- scoring more than your opponent. Runs are runs, scored or prevented they all count the same. Worry about scoring more and allowing fewer, not which positions contribute to which side of the equation or how "consistent" you are at your current level of performance.

    Brandon Phillips

Hey, maybe we should start a RedsZone "poster" of the week program.

A pickup that's worked this week...Let's hold off on going crazy until we can see if he's able to continue putting up solid numbers. I hope he continues to succed, but I see some lurking indicators of problems -- such as his low walk rate and, possibly, his future loss of everyday playing time to Ryan Freel when Jr. gets off the DL -- that might impede his future development.

The history of the major leagues is littered with guys who managed to have a great week or two but whose names have long since been forgotten. But, I remain optomistic.

We all know it's not a done deal, but Phillips at the least is better defensively and has more power then Womack and is much younger. I'd probably give him more speed at this point - maybe not, but a better base stealer - we'll see. We can all be very excited about the possibility of having EE, FeLo, and Phillips in the Reds infield for a long time.

Has anyone heard any discussion on if there is such a record/stat as most RBI in a week? And if so where would Brandon's 17 last week rank?

Ensberg had numbers for a very honorable second place, IMO.
