Has anyone heard anything on Gardner and Pauley????

Does anyone have any news on Gardner and Pauley? I thought by now we would have here something. Or any news on Wirfin Obispo? I thought he was suppose to pitch for AA this year.

There was a report the other day that both are in extended spring training and Gardner was within a week or two of throwing off the mound, and Pauly was still a couple weeks behind Gardner. I think both are to go to Chattanooga when ready to pitch. I haven't heard anything new on Obispo, myself.

MINOR MATTERS: Richie Gardner and Thomas Pauly were the No. 3- and No. 6-rated prospects by Baseball America going into last season. If you've checked this year's minor-league stats, you'll see they are nowhere to be found.

The two right-handers are coming off shoulder surgery and rehabbing at extended spring training.

"Richie is about two weeks from throwing off the mound," said Johnny Almaraz, the Reds' director of player development/international operations. "Pauly is a little behind him, probably a month away."

Gardner, 24, was minor-league player of the year in '04 after combining to go 13-5 with a 2.53 ERA at Single-A Sarasota and Double-A Chattanooga. That same year, Pauly went 8-7 with a 2.97 ERA and led the Carolina League with 135 strikeouts in 1211/3 innings.

I really had high hopes for those two.

Never did for Pauly. Rumors of future shoulder problems were already there before he was drafted.

Gardner, yeah that hurt. Matter of fact, during the 2004 season, EE/Coffey and a man by the name of Richie Gardner were considered key parts of Reds rebuilding. Just think, if Gardner doesn't have his rogue injury, he is probably pitching with Cincy right now this season. Horrid luck on a guy that seemed crisp.

    I'd be curious to know...

Has anyone ever done a "success rate" calculation on pitchers that undergo major arm surgery before pitching above the AA level?

Gardner and Pauley are, most likely, done as legitimate prospects. I know it sounds really calculating, but if they've only got a 3-5% chance of ever pitching in the bigs now -- is it really worth it to spend money paying for them to have surgery and rehab?

How did lawyers get stereotyped as cold-hearted again??

    No, seriously, an interesting question.

I once saw something regarding this subject. Pitchers with shoulder (i.e., labrum) surgeries while in the minors typically have a very low success rate. Elbow (i.e., Tommy John) surgeries have a much higher success rate. I know that this wasn't exactly what you were looking for, but this was a few years back. But it caught my attention b/c it seemed at that time that Reds minor leaguers had more shoulder than elbow problems.
