People who thought the Reds would win 70 will be upset if they only win 80.

What if Griffey's been Wally Pipped?

The Marlins are getting double in revenue sharing what they're spending on payroll.

If we had a dollar for everyone who ever thought they were getting the game but didn't, we could buy our own satellite.

It's not easy being the boss of somebody who's already in the Hall of Fame.

We would have had world peace by now but the argument keeps going back to Dunn's strikeouts.

The player who has made the most final outs of the game with the tying or winning run on is Derek Jeter.

I hope the Reds aren't playing so well at the trading deadline that they don't feel the need to make a move.

LOL, might be, but then again Junior's has a better career thus far than Wally Pipp - more on par with, uh, let's say Lou Gehrig!

And what a stat on the Marlins - that would never happen with an NFL system because you'd have a minimum payroll requirement (I believe it's like that and I do understand they've got a salary cap built in too).

I've always found this baseball saying to be interesting. Goes to show you the superstitions of professional athletes...

Clearly Lou Gherig was the better player who went on to have an outstanding career...but nobody ever referred to anyone "Pulling a Lou Gherig" on an injured or resting starter. Wally Pip got the saying because of the extra meaning (and potential bad luck) behind referring to someone as being like Lou Gherig.

One of the greatest of all time, and because of something completely out of his control, it's almost taboo to compare current players to him.

I remember when Todd Benzinger got Wally Pipped in 1990 by Hal Morris. He seemed to handle it with dignity, although I'm sure there was probably some tension in the clubhouse.

That Marlins owner makes Pond Scum look good.

First he trades the Expos for the Marlins, with a 3 part deal involving the Red Sox. He steps away from the Expos leaving them ruined for at least 5 years.
Then he hornswaggles the rest of the major league by making fools out of them by winning the World Series 2 years after doing the biggest salary dump in history. Then he takes twice as much money from the big revenue teams as he spends, pocketing it. Then he recreates the biggest salary dump in history by doing it again last winter. Luckily for him, most South Florida fans don't seem to have a clue what they don't have.

Now he's in the middle of trying to extort money from South Florida taxpayers using the threat of leaving, which nobody doubts, as this guy makes Art Model look like a beloved community leader in Cleveland.
The name is Jeffrey Loria, and he is the biggest pile of waste Major League Baseball has every seen, which is actually saying quite a bit.

He's rebuilding for the future to win as often as possible while turning a profit? What's wrong with that?
I hope it's never sunny in Philly again.

If it was just rebuilding, but baseball isn't reloading like Ohio State. He's been very lucky. His whole career has been about OPM (Other People's Money).

Too bad they already replaced the White House Press Secretary with that spin ability. While that may be true on one side of the coin, I'd say he needs to account for the money he is getting from the revenue sharing kitty. The whole theory behind revenue sharing is competitive balance opportunities for all the teams.

While I agree in theory I don't think they should be forced to spend that money and sign junk just to say they spent it, maybe they are using it on the draft?

Great stuff as always, Cubb. I always look forward to these. I think that first one might make a good signature.

Speaking of being Wally Pipped, what poor team picked Pipp up for the swan song of his career? And thus trotted a sub standard 1st sacker out there.

That would be our beloved Reds.

Actually Wally did a formidable job in '26 leading the Reds to a pennant race (with all the other offensive 'career years')

After that, he and Cuckoo Christiansen re-bought their souls from the devil.
