Actually, if you can recall (I think it was 2004) that the Reds swept a 5 game series from them in GAB......that team still tanked a month later.

It was a 4 gamer, no such thing as a 5. It was early in the year, as you mentioned. They fell apart quickly after that.

    Actually it was 2003.

May 5-8, 2003. REDS win 5-4, 6-5, 4-2 & 8-6. The same run differential as the 2-game series that was just played.

The winning pitchers? Williamson, Reitsma, Graves & Sullivan.

The REDS starters? Reidling, Austin, Graves & Wilson.

Aaron Boone hit 3 HRs (hello, Albert!) in game 4.

Re: when was the last time the Reds swept the Cards?

I don't know how to look this up....or I would....but IRC a few years ago, because of rain-outs, either the Reds or the Cubs played a 5 game series which included at least one duble-header. And again, if this aging brain is not lost all over again, one team either won all 5 or won 4 of the 5.

Any way to look this kind of thing up?

I checked back to the 2003 season and could not find a 5-gamer. The REDS did, however, play two 1-game series (not sure of the proper way to say this) since 2003. Both times it was against Philadelphia... rainout games that were replayed later on a Monday off-day.

BOSTON, May 2 August at Fenway Park. Five games in four days. The Yankees and the Red Sox, probably in a pennant race.

"It will be hot," Yankees Manager Joe Torre said. "And exciting."

Tuesday's rainout set up that delicious possibility. The Red Sox have tentatively rescheduled the game for Friday, Aug. 18 at 1:05 p.m. as part of a day-night doubleheader. The Yankees are scheduled to begin a three-city trip that day that will also take them to Seattle and Anaheim.

    True story:

Back in 87 he was a catcher for the Pirates. My buddies and I were OBSESSED with baseball cards. Our 12 year old senses of humor thought his name was "kinda funny sounding" We kept up with his stats and progress even though he wasn't really very good, just because we liked his name.

Anyway, so we decide to mail him a few baseball cards to sign, just for the heck of it. We figured he probably didnt get a lot of fanmail, so why not...

    Get this:
He returned the cards to us, all 3 signed, one of them personally signed to me. He also signed a folding card of Pittsburgh's 1987 schedule, THAT HE PROVIDED. AND, he wrote us a short letter, THANKING US for writing. Once I get to 200 rep points, I will scan the card and make it my avatar.

Contrast this with a similar letter we sent to Barry Bonds. Keep in mind this is 1987 Barry Bonds. Still young and still unproven. ...we never got those cards back, but I'm sure a trashcan in Pittsburgh did. Jerk. (hehe)

And that is the history behind my avatar name here.

Benny Distefano is a name known around these parts as a star of the 13-15 year-old Babe Ruth World Series Champions from Brooklyn. IIRC, it was either the first or one of the first such events hosted in my home town, which is now the perennial home of the 16-18 Babe Ruth World Series.

His host family was the Director of the ballpark I umpired at growing up, which made him my boss. I never did meet Benny, but they kept in touch with him as his career progressed.

Re: when was the last time the Reds swept the Cards?

Ok, it was the 13 year old World Series according to this link, but I still think it was 13-15. You'll see Benny's name throughout that link.

As I was looking through that, I also noticed "Richard Aurilia" on a team as a 10 year old under the heading "1982." Sure enough, I see Rich hails from Brooklyn, born 9/2/71. Looks like he was a teammate of Joe Pepitone's boy. Interesting, but sorry for the sidetrack.
