    Cincinnati Reds Songs

I'm trying to research songs written for, about or concerning the Cincinnati Reds.

    So far I've found:

    "Reds Hot!" (of course)

"Red Stockings Schottish" (Dedicated to the ladies of Cincinnati, Austin, Mrs. Hettie Shirley (m). New York: J.L. Peters, 1869)

"Oh, You Reds: Song And Chorus" (Hendy, Hayden (m & w). Cincinnati, OH: H. Hendy, 1910.
    (M1978.S713H) E236789.)

"The March of the Champs" (. Palmer, Will H. (m & w). Cincinnati, OH: The Modern Music Publishing Co., 1941.
(M1978.B2P) Epub. 94202. [Note: The official March of the 1941 Cincinnati Reds.])

Johnny Bench Song Book. (Lovejoy, Add (m & w). Cincinnati, OH: Municorn Music Co., 1971.
    (M1977.S713L69).

[Note: Contains several photographs of Bench and the following songs: The Baseball Song; The Most Welcome Sound; The First Time; Teamwork; Rainy Saturday; South Paw; The Rookie; It's a Girls Game Too! Pizza Party; Victory Song.])

    "Cin-c-i-n-n-a-t-i" (Jaffe, Moe (m & w). New York: Mills Music, Inc., 1938.
    (M1978.B2J3) Epub. 70669.)

Off the top of anyone's head, do you know of any other songs about the Reds, and/or where I may be able to find recordings of these songs listed here?
My dad got to enjoy 3 Reds World Championships by the time he was my age. So far, I've only gotten to enjoy one. Step it up Redlegs!

Well there is always the Blessid Union of Souls CD "Play Ball", which I personally love. Except for track 4 the whole thing is good, although a couple of the songs are now outdated.
Benzinger backing and calling! And the 1990 world championship series belongs to the Cincinnati Reds!

Anyone know the song they used to play when DLo was up to bat? It went "Heeeeeyyyy Cincinnati... Go REDS!"

Love that song, of only because it was so much easier to make fun of DLo with that playing in the background.

If you tell me how to do it I can e-mail them to you, or I can burn a copy of it and mail it to you. Either way is fine.

    Gotta Be Me Lyrics

    [chorus: Cresia]
And I just gotta be me...me...me
And I'm gonna stay sucka free...free...free
And I just gotta be me...

    (Lil' Flip)
I'm an 18 year old CEO
I got fans thats dyin to see me flow
    my favorite movie is CB-4
H$E Click you know we throwed
I'm 6 foot 1 on the digital scale
I'm a ghetto star and a man as well
and I'm all about my mail like a man in jail
I wonder if I put my tape out, can it sell?
only time will tell how many copies get sold
and I pray to god that I live to get old
cuz half of my homeboys already dead
and the other half doin time with the feds
I'm like the CincinnatI Reds I'm playin ball for the pennant
and if I fall while I'm tryin I start from the beginning
they say practice make perfect and it really paid off
I'm my own boss now so I can't get laid off
and I'm gonna stay the same flip no matter what it takes
and I won't stop rappin no matter how much I make
Whether I'm rich or broke i'ma still crack jokes
and I never turn my back on mobbin foes

    [chorus]

    (Lil' Flip)
I done been through a lot of pain
at an early age ??? gave me silent game
I got knowledge but I didn't get it from college man
I'm not gonna change because I'm flyin private planes
and if I don't work, my pockets hurt
man it costs a lot of money livin on this earth
everybody got to shine but it's my turn
the early bird gets the worm that's what I learned
ever since I was a kid I had to ball
I don't smoke cigarettes and I hate alcohol
I went from being a janitor to a manager
when you become a star with me, wanna dance with yah
I'm gonna keep my platinum teeth and my pants saggin
now everybody wanna jump on the band waggon
    I ain't braggin, because I got a little change,
I ain't gonna let my head blow up cuz I got a little fame
now when my cousin died things got a little strange
I know the block is hot just ask lil wayne
everybody dream about goin to hollywood
but look how fast I turned clover land into ???

    [chorus]

    (Lil' Flip)
everyday I'm on the paper chase
I gotta win first place in this paper race
a lot of kids around the world wanna take my place
but momma said boy don't let nobody take your space
that's why I pay attention, so I can see
it ain't the army but I'm bein all I can be
so everyday I shop like I hit the lottery
I'm Lil' Flip that's the only thing I gotta be

There is a Reds version of "Talkin' Baseball." And of course, one of the 1990 theme songs of the Reds is the origin of my handle...

There you can order the Terry Cashman CD's. I've been told there is another version recorded in the late 80's perhaps, but I have not found them yet. I ordered the NL CD from this site a couple of years ago for my dad, so I didn't have any problems placing an order with this company.

"Clutch Hits"... it's already been released. They were promoting it locally toward the end of ST.

Ironically, there's a recent article promoting it as well; I just read it today (see below for the article).

BTW, I have the 'Play Ball' CD, and I love it! We play it all the time, especially in the spring. It's upbeat and really gets your blood burning for baseball to start. It was released when the GAB opened in 2003 and they play some of the songs at the ballpark on a pretty regular basis.

Reds 'Clutch Hits' album for sale
Disc proceeds to benefit Cincinnati's nonprofit organization
By Kyle Burch / Special to MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Reds Community Fund, always thinking of ways to involve the community and raise money for its different programs, has put together "Clutch Hits," a CD compilation of local and national musical talent focusing on songs about baseball and the Reds.
The disc features music from 11 different local talents, as well as nationally acclaimed acts Blessid Union of Souls and Peter Frampton. It also includes a contribution from Raquel Aurilia, wife of Reds infielder Rich Aurilia, and an introduction from legendary Reds radio broadcaster Marty Brennaman.

The different genres of music included in the compilation should bring a wide range of appeal, reaching out to all Reds fans. According to Reds creative media manager David Storm, the idea of using music to raise money came from Reds Hall of Famer George Foster.

"George is the commissioner of the [Reds Rookie Success League], and when he was out on the field one day last year, we had some music playing and the kids were dancing and singing with it," said Storm, whose band The Screaming Mimes has two songs on the disc. "He said that this should be a way for us to reach the kids. Through the music."

The album is sort of a follow up to a disc put together last season by Jeff Pence and Reds Community Fund adviser Vikki Rieger. That disc only had eight songs, most coming from Pence's band Blessid Union of Souls, and was given out to the kids who took part in the RRSL.

Reds Community Fund executive director Charley Frank says that the ultimate goal was to present a wider and more diverse sampling of music for Reds fans.

"Vikki really carried the ball for us with this project," Frank said. "This year's CD is almost like a second phase of the project. Our ultimate goal was to get as many local people involved in this project, and I think those who have done the work on this have exceeded everyone's expectations."

So in the offseason, Storm joined Pence to begin compiling a list of some of their favorite local bands to ask for a recording for the disc. An important part of the compilation was variety. Listeners can find everything from bluegrass (Jake Speed), funk (Freekbass) to power pop (psychodots and And Andy) and folk (Noah Hunt).

All of the artists contributed an original song to the compilation -- something that Storm says makes the CD unique.

"Hearing everyone's personal take on the Reds is something that makes the songs stand out," he said. "Since everyone is local, they are all big fans of the Reds, too."

The discs will be on sale at the Reds Community Fund booth at all home games at Great American Ball Park, and a sampling of the music can be heard being played pre- and postgame during all 81 home games this season.

Fans can also order the CD online at reds.com in the RCF Online Shop.

Because Buddy Rogers Music is the main sponsor of the project, the CDs are expected to be available at all Buddy Rogers locations in Cincinnati very soon.

Fans will also get a chance to catch some of the acts featured on the CD live in the Fan Zone as part of the Taco Bell Late-Night Concert Series following every Friday and Saturday game at Great American Ball Park. Blessid Union of Souls, for example, will be performing on Saturday, Aug. 5, following the Reds-Braves game.

All proceeds from the Clutch Hits CD benefit the RCF, the official nonprofit organization of the Cincinnati Reds.

Kyle Burch is an intern in the Reds Creative Services department. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs.

I listened to that one. I came away from it thinking that it's a wonder Marge didn't have it played during the 7th Inning stretch instead of the traditional song.
