I think if he had better range he gets to that ball quicker and doesn't have to rush the transfer to throw, resulting in that throwing error. Better speed should equal better range should equal less throwing errors. I also think he underestimated the time he had to get the ball to first base.

Lopez probably makes the play between 85-90 times out of 100.
